Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 20, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Wtdnmday, March THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD New Look Wolf whistles greet parliamentary veteran By DOUG SMALL OTTAWA (CP) Parliamentary veteran Erik Nielsen has been described as many things during his 17 years in the Commons a political fox, a shrewd advocate of northern rights and a sharp critic of invasions of privacy. But never has he been regarded as being particularly pretty. After all. the lawyer MP for the sprawling frontier riding of Yukon is 50 years old and the father of three. Small wonder then that he stumbled a bit when he was greeted in the Commons Monday with wolf whistles and a general hoopla over his appearance. The reason' He has a new hairdo that waves his greying brown hair gently across his forehead and gives him what 'hair stylists call the sculpted look. "Get a load of the new bellowed one MP, as Mr. Nielsen rose to ask a question. Others responded with hoots, whistles and catcalls. Undaunted, Mr. Nielsen shot back at Health Minister Marc Lalonde that it was all very well for the baldish minister to smile: "But at least I have some on top." That brought on more heckling and one backbencher called out. "You have some on top, but nothing inside." Later, in an interview, Mr. Nielsen said his coiffure is the result of a visit to a parliamentary barber located in a new MPs office building adjacent to Parliament Hill. Unlike the barbers on the Hill, who pride themselves in a modified army-type cut with lots of skin showing above the ear. the new barber provides the razor cuts and other styling techniques. "There's nothing cheap about the MP chuckled, explaining how he had got the latest in hair fashion. He said he had asked for the most expensive was given it. "But at least I'm no Paul he added, referring to the Senate government leader's former practice of dying his hair Mr. Nielsen did admit, however, that the new hair style presents some problems. In the past, his hair was combed back on his head "and there was always plenty of oil to keep it there." Now. however, it falls freely in his eyes and he says it's annoying to have to look through it. Venezuela gears for takeover of oil firms CARACAS (AP> Venezuela, the world's fifth- ranking oil producer, is gearing for a state takeover of its oil run by mostly American companies for more than 40 years. Virtually every political party favors state control of Ihe 33 milison-barrel-a-day oil industry, backbone of the national economy. The leading opposition Social Christian party introduced in the Senate Monday a bill calling for immediate and total nation- alization of the industry The proposal was sent to a committee for study. Earlier this month, the .small left-wing Peoples Electoral Movement introduced a similar bill in the lower house of Congress. The Movement was the au- thor of the oil reversion law passed by Congress in mid- 1970 to guarantee slate takeover of the industry. without compensation, when She 40-year oil concessions begin expiring in 1983. Both congressional bills pro- vide for payment of com- pensation upon early state takeover, but such a payment would not exceed the value of assets on company books. The Social Christians say these assets now total about 3 billion Foreign oil companies, in- cluding Exxon. Shell. Mobil. Gulf. Sun Oil and Texaco, have invested a total of approximately billion in Venezuela's oil industry, which currently employes about 22.000 persons, all 'but WXt of them Venezuelans. FOLLOWS STUDY The Social Christian bill was drawn up after an extensive study by the mines and hydro- carbons ministry. The Social Christians were the ruling party until March 12. when President Carlos Andres Perez of the Democratic Action party replaced former president Rafael Caldera.
