Record year for fertilizer TORONTO (CP) Fertilizer consumption records will be broken in Western Canada this year, E. A. Kowalenko, Canadian sales manager for chemical and fertilizer sales of Cominco Ltd. of Vancouver, said this week. Mr. Kowalenko, speaking at a national fertilizer conference sponsored by the Ontario ministry of agriculture and food, said the industry estimated last fall that Western Canadian demand would be 1.25 million tons, almost 20 per cent greater than the tons of the 1973 fertilizer year, which ended June 30, 1973. "The industry committed itself to supplying this he said. "At the present time, indications are that the October estimate will be met." Mr. Kowalenko said, in the first half of the current year, the industry shipped 316.000 tons of fertilizer products to market, an increase of 137 per cent from the previous year. He noted, however, that while the supply will be 1.25 million tons, Western Canadian farmers might want more. He suggested that for the next fertilizer year, that an even tighter supply situation might prevail than in the current spring.
