IBeny Chevrolet Oldsmobile 07 4tKA i Nearly every day you can read in the paper where there has been another farm machinery accident. Often they are very tragic. Even if nobody is killed there is always pain and lost time involved. I think ignoring the danger of power-take-off drives causes most farm accidents, because operators are able to get near whirling unprotected shafts while the machine is standing still. One fanner I knew had the bad habit of slipping back along the drawbar to adjust machinery levers. All the warnings he received didn't do any good. One day they found him when he didn't show up for dinner, caught under the tractor fender. He had tried once too often to adjust the machine and was finished plowing for good. I suppose most accidents happen through carelessness, but others come along without any forewarning. Cleve Ross once told me about a strange incident which happened on his farm. Cleve ran a pretty big spread of dry-farming a few miles northeast of Coaldale. One spring in the 50's he and his hired help were almost finished seeding and starting summerfallow work. They didn't have the oil wagons and other service equipment in the field the first day, so Pete drove the machine he was running, home for dinner and refueling. On the way back to work he had a gallon can of starting gasoline on the platform. The can began sliding away as he drove along near 20 miles per hour Pete made a grab for the can and pulled the wheel a little at the same time, when he looked up it was too late; he was heading into the "bar-pit." It wasn't deep enough to roll the heavy tractor, but it did flip Pete off the seat and left him in a cloud of dust on the ground Things happened pretty fast during the next few minutes, Pete couldn't do anything but stand and watch. In seconds the tractor was out of the dust cloud and headed out across a big stubble field. It made a big circle and headed back toward Pete. Pete thought he might- catch in on the way by, but he couldn't run quite fast enough. All he did was skin his fingers clawing at the fender. It crossed the graded road again at a long gradual run, and took a big circle on the other side, this time returning straight for the road. The tractor sort of leaped over the first ditch hitting the road near the edge, then really jumped down into the other ditch. Pete figured that would be the finish, the front wheels and axle would stay right there, and the diesel would bury its nose and stall But it didn't; the tractor bulldozed its way through the light soil and gathered speed for another run. This time the wild circles got progressively smaller, and soon it was running with the front wheels cramped as short as possible. This took a lot of power in road gear so it slowed down to about half speed, and Pete managed to grab the seat and get aboard. The invention had taken control for a while, but finally Pete reversed things and was again in the driver's seat. Cleve came along near the end of the action, and could hardly believe the tracks he saw. NEED NEW PEOPLE Get out of the house a few hours a day and earn money at the same time.
