Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 19, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD - FRIDAY, MARCH 19. 1971 CBC telecasts Capote documentary A look at 'death row' In 1967, American author Truman Capote wrote and directed a film documentary on capital punishment, focussed on 'prisoners awaiting execution in three state prisons in the U.S. Using the same technique be had used in his best-selling book, In Cold Blood, which was an in-depth study of two murderers involved in a seemingly motiveless multiple killing, Capote came up with film described by Newsweek as "a piece of reportage so extraordinarily forceful it virtually demands a place somewhere on the tube . . ." Death Row (as the documentary is titled) was made for an American network, but it has never been telecast. The controversy surrounding the network's decision not to air it drew bitter comments from Capote, who reported that it was designated as "too grim." Juxtaposed with these and other death row interviews are interviews with proponents of capital punishment as well as opponents. Among the former are Governor Ronald Reagan of California, and Dr. Leo L. Stanley, former chief surgeon at San Quentin. The opponents include Edward Bennett Williams, a famous American criminal-trial lawyer.
