The number of employ'ces involved iti .strikes during February were over 300 less than the number during tlic previous month similarly, affected, wliile the number of woiicing; days lost was less tlian the numibcr lost during January by over 16,000. Eleven disputes actually commenced during February, only one of which affected more than 100 men. The only serious dispute o*' the month was that oE the coal miners ofi Vancouver Island,'which continued from last mouth without a settlement being marie, and miners at Bnttanca Beach,- B. C. The laitter involved ^about upwards of 300 employees 'and waS' aot terminated at the end; of -the month. A disputiv between the International Marine Signal Co., and their employees at Ottawa was settled after conferences arranged j between the parties by the department of labor. Tlie department's index number. of thq wholesale prices stood at 13S-4, for February, as compared with 136,3 in .January, and 13'1.7 in February, 1912.. . . . . � The index numbers arc percentages of the average,prices.of'SUft commodities during the decade.
