TAYLOR Christian Science Monitor There's a commercial on television now suggesting that Americans visit Israel, offering near-subliminal glimpses of the land's attractions from fashion and sunbathing to antiquities Israel's tourist trade is in difficulty and is using American media to counter its problem It's latest weapon is one of the country's foremost stars of stage and screen, Gila Almagor As a native-born Israeli, the petite brunette performer jumped at the opportunity to serve her country Even though it meant delaying the dream she treasured all though her career "to be able to play Chekhov once Miss Almagor is now touring the United States to tell Americans that Israeli arms are stretched wide, and that life in her homeland is normal When she returns shortly to Israel she will begin rehearsals for the role of Nina in Chekhov s The Seagull As Hamlet is every actor's dream in Western theatre, so Chekhov is a goal for Israeli performers Miss Almagor was recently invited to Moscow her country has no formal relations with the Soviet Union) and while there saw the theater which is closely connected with Chekhov She was runner-up for (he title of best actress in the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, and she has been in a number of films that have reached American shores She is married to Jacob Agmon, producer of one of her most recent films due for release shortly in the United States In his Siege, she portrays a widow of the six- day war Another of her three pictures has been bought by MGM for North American distribution It is Highway Queen, in which she plays a voung mother The third is (dlled The House on Shloush Street which is in Tel Aviv, and Miss Almagor has the role of an older woman, mother of four children, of whom the oldest is 17 Miss Almagor's father was German, her mother Polish, and she herself grew up in an Israeli Children's Village for orphans Her father, a member of the British Mandate police, was killed in 1939 during riots before Miss Almagor was born Her village experience, she said, warm and fnendlv I liked it I used to go to visit mv mother Speaking fluent English, and looking every inch a star, in her deep green pants and lighter green sweater, her dark eyes flashing, she admitted she would enjoy the experience of working in a film in the Unites States She is no stranger to America having visited about every other year She first came 11 years ago, "the day after we were married Her husband studied at the New School of Social Research in New York, and she worked with Uta Hagen and with Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio for two years 'After eight years of professional acting, I decided to quit, leave my work, and go back and study from the beginning like a beginner I decided America would be the best place for me, because I didn't want to go to an academy Today Miss Almagor has a one-woman program she calls The Swinging Club of Little Lola "There she smiled. so many Lolas in the 20's and '30 s, so my show is based on their songs songs from the '20's, '30 s and early 40 s All in Hebrew, of course Such songs as Fanny Bnce's My Man, and many by Noel Coward While a physical disability kept her from active duty in Israel s armed forces as all sabras (native born) undertake, she is a member of the forces, and her job is to co- ordinate the visits of foreign entertainers GILA ALMAGOR LUNCH HOUR SPECIAL!
