Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 17, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Food costs cut by advertising OTTAWA (CP) Advertis- ing, far from adding to food costs, reduces them by increas- ing sales and footing cost for displays to the media, the Association of Canadian Adver- tisers said today. Along the way, it pays for the "free-press concept" of Ca- nadian media, the association told the special Commons com- mittee on food prices. "As advti Using spresls in- formation about new precis or new uses for old it also pay; the bills for as as- tonishing amount of informa- tional and educational mater- ial carried in the mass media, the vehicles which probably give the psychological set to the nation's society and cul- ture." Advertising is "efficient mass selling" in a society that re- quires mass selling and mass distribution, the association said in its brief. "The more people who know about product, the more peo- ple who are likely to consider buying it. Long, predictable production runs effectively util ize equipment, thereby reduc ing unit prices." The association also describ- ed advertising as a "form o insurance insurance that the present users of the product re- member and buy it again." The association also issued warning that Can- dians can expect to pay more for food if proposed federa regulations requiring listing o ingredients on packages are brought into effect.
