Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 16, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 16 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Saturday, March 16, 1974 Star of British stage makes Canadian debut OTTAWA (CP) A some- times diffuse but moving an- thology of- writings by and about English monarchs from 1066 to 1900 served Thursday night for the Canadian debut of Dame Peggy Ashcroft, widely regarded as the first lady of the English stage. She appeared at the National Arts Centre (NAC) with other stars of the Royal Shakespeare Company in John Barton's The Hollow Crown. She won the Paris Festival Theatre's best actress award for the role more than 10 years ago. not long after she was made a Dame of the British Empire for her con- tribution to the theatre. Opening a 2Wweek run in the NAC only North American appearance on this Peggy won warm applause for her reading of Queen Victoria's diary entry on the day of her coronation. The play, a dramatic reading of historic writings dating from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, through Shakespeare to the last century, also featured Norman Rodway, James Grout and Paul Hardwick, with Martin Best as balladeer. The performance was almost a recital of the music of the English language, as heard perhaps nowhere but on the English stage and at such classic theatres as the Stratford Festival. The second half of the show, however, drew close audience attention and plaudits with the major display of acting talents by Dame Peggy and her colleagues. After the show, she was a guest of honor at an arts centre reception. DA ME PEGGY ASHCROFT Open Sunday.
