Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 15, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 16 THE LETHBRIDOE HERALD Friday, March 15, Singleton feels Expos will boom DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (CP) Ken Singleton, who led Montreal Expos in most offensive departments in the 1973 National League baseball season, says this could be the year offensively for the ball club. "We are going to score a lot more runs this Singleton said as he leaned on the batting cage watching team-mate Willie Davis take a few cuts. "This is going to be a year when we swing the bats. Last spring, we hit better than we ever have and it spread through the season. I never set any personal goals or anything like .that. I just figure that I should go out there every day and do my best "Mind you, if I can hit .300, everything else will sort of fall into place." One of the key factors in the Expos' chances for the pennant is pitching, says Singleton. "If some of the pitchers could straighten themselves out. we'll do all right." "Last year, we didn't realize we had a chance until midway through the season. Now we are starting this season with renewed confidence. "1 think we are also going to have fun. That goes with win- ning." Singleton was the only player in the majors to score at least 100 runs, drive in at least 100. receive at least 100 walks and hit .300 or more on the season. The switch-hitting right fielder finished eighth in the National League batting race with a .302 average and was fifth in the runs-batted-in category with 103. "And he's picking up right where he left said Duke Snider, the Expos' special bat- ting instructor. "He's swinging a good bat this spring." Singleton says he doubts there will be a race for the National League East Division crown like there was last season when five clubs were involved in the chase in the final month. "Someone asked me how I'd like to see it go this Singleton said. "I'd like to see us five games ahead with four games to go. "I think we have a good shot at it this year. I know we have." Harris tied for lead JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) John Mahaffey and Labron Harris shot 68s and tied for the first-round lead Thursday in the Greater Jacksonville Open golf tournament. They shared a one-stroke advantage over Steve Spray and Leonard Thompson, a winner three weeks ago in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., each with 69. Those four were the only ones in the 156-men field able to break 70 on the Deerwood Country Club course, a lake- spotted, par-72 layout that played even longer because of the chilly temperatures and a tusty, swirling wind- Arnold Palmer headed a group at 70, just two strokes off the pace. Also at that figure were Masters champion Tommy Aaron, Hubert Green. DeWitt Weaver, South African Bobby Cole and Nate Starks. "Considering the conditions, it wasn't a bad round, but it could have been a lot the 44-year-old Palmer said. Australian Bruce Crampton was in a large group at 71 and British Open champion Tom Weiskopf matched par 72 on what he called "just a dull day." Lee Trevino shot 40 on the front nine and struggled home with a 75, three over par and seven strokes back. Mahaffey, a 25-year-old who won the Sahara Invitational and more than last season, has missed the last two tournaments because of a mild case of the flu. "My doctor said I could either play last week and come home sick or stay home and play this week." Mahaffey said. "I think I made the right choice." Mahaffey used some_ brilliant sand play to take his share of the top spot. He was in bunkers on four holes, and played those holes one under par. Harris had to scramble to save his share of the lead. He missed the green on three of his last four holes, but one- putted for saving pars on all of them, twice from six feet and once from about two.
