Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 13, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta March 13, 1t74-THt LETHMIDOI HBBALO-29 on-the Lake Old ChonnelJ Canal Proposed Waterway Proposed Canal The United States Corps of Engineers has called for a study of an additional canal linking Lake Erie and Lake Ontario to supplement the existing Welland Canal. -The proposed canal would run south through New York State, across the Niagara Escarpment, to a link-up with the Niagara River near the eastern side of Grand Island. From there the canal would use the river to the Buffalo, N.Y., harbor. Locks on the proposed waterway would permit passage of vessels approximately 105 feet wide and feet long. The largest ship the Welland Canal can handle is 730 feet long and 75 feet wide. The estimated cost of the project would be billion. Market decision urged on grain, livestock prices CALGARY (CP) The federal government should stop regulating feed grain and livestock prices and "let the market George Sayle, president of United Farmers of Alberta Co- operative Ltd., said Tuesday. Government attempts to guarantee minimum prices for feed grain or to guarantee meat prices can only result in "consumer pressure to keep meat prices down, endless administrative problems and endless controversy over regional he said. Mr. Sayle told the annual meeting of United Farmers of Alberta that both the producer and the feed grower have a right to ask the government for assurances that ad hoc policies which interfere with the market place will be discontinued. Inflation and unstable prices are due to government policies, he said, citing the current beef price situation as an example of governments yielding to public pressure to implement unwise policies. "The United States government imposed price ceilings on beef and the Canadian government responded by export controls. The U.S. producers withheld supplies until the whole beef industry In both countries was thoroughly fouled up and the end is not yet in sight." He recommended the wider use of commodity markets as an effective means of stablizing the agricultural industry. Rapeseed and beef are sold on the commodity markets in Canada and commodity markets are extensively used in the U.S., he said. If properly supervised and used, they could eliminate a part of the risk factor. "Under a commodity market system, the cattle feeder could accurately estimate the profitability of his proposed enterprise before it began because he would know both the buying and the selling price of his cattle. He also would be able to buy feed supplies at a set price for delivery at various times during their feed period." Commodity markets would need expert supervision by an. independent board, he said. They should be available at least on a regional basis and should be fully understood by those who use them. "Commodity markets will work better without government interference in the market he said. "But even with such interference, they can still provide a measure of protection." Kaiser thermal coal sale pacts completed VANCOUVER (CP) Kaiser Resources Ltd. said Tuesday it has concluded agreements for sale of thermal coal to buyers in Europe and eastern Canada. Thermal coal is used for energy production. This year. Kaiser has contracts to sell long tons of thermal coal to Denmark. 120.000 long tons to France and a test shipment of 25.000 net tons to Ontario Hydro. In 1975. Kaiser has agreed to sell 200.000 long tons of thermal coal to France. The shipments to Denmark and France will be handled through the company's terminal facilities at Roberts Bank, south of Vancouver. The shipments for Ontario Hydro will move by train from the mine at Sparwood, B.C., in the East Kootenay, to Thunder Bay, Ont. It will then be shipped by boat to Toronto. The company also announced that is has reached an agreement with Japanese customers to permit higher coking coal prices by relaxation of escalation terms in sale contracts and changing the moisture specification of coal to eight per cent from six percent Coking coal is used in the production of steel. The company now receives a long ton. The new agreement raised the escalation ceiling to Canadian from W cents U.S. from July to March 31, 1975. CN ORDERS HOPPER CARS MONTREAL (CP) Canadian National Railways announced today it has' ordered hopper cars at a cost of 136 million and 15 locomotives worth 96 million from two Ontario firms. The hopper cars will be built by National Steel Car of Hamilton to help move potash from Saskatchewan to the U.S. They are to be delivered in the first quarter of next year.
