Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 13, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, March 13, 1971 - THI UTHBRIDOI HERALD - 21 Senator claims industrial group fooled governments on tax deals OTTAWA (CP) - Senator Charles McElman (L-New Brunswick) says the K. C. Irving interests have been among New.Brunswick industries which "played the municipal governments off against one another in a ruthless fashion for special tax deals." He says the deals have consisted of long-term agreements for a special tax rate which was "a minute fraction of what they (the Irving interests) should Py." He made the comments during Senate debate of the report by the special Senate committee on the mass media. He said that to bis knowledge the Saint John, N.B., Tele-graph-Journal, a daily newspaper owned by the Irving group, "never editorialized against the inequitable and iniquitous tax deals." "But when the government brought in uniform assessment and tax rates throughout New Brunswick, stopped all such future deals and appeared to be heading for cancellation of existing ones, Mr. Irving went before the legislature itself . . . and threatened all manner of dire consequences. "His papers came through in full voice. The Telegraph-Jour* nal ran a story with Mr. Irv-ing's picture at the top. The cut-line warned the government to listen to 'the voice of New Brunswick.'" Senator McElman said that as a result the "old deals" were not scrapped but some companies have since voluntarily rescinded their agreements and pay full taxes. 'Land of Rape, Honey9 slogan ruled out OTTAWA (OP)- Tfedafe, Sask., can't use the stamp cancellation "Land of Rape and Honey" because other countries might not know the meaning of rape. Furthermore, stamp cancellation marks have to be bilingual and both in English and in French the words "land of rape and honey" would be too long. That was the official ruling in the Commons Friday from Jean-Pierre Cote, minister responsible for the post office. The Tisdale area produces, rapeseed, source of an edible oil, and honey. Tfsdale wanted to use the slogan "Land of Rape and Honey" to help promote a 1971 homecoming. Mr. Cote said the post office would be willing to consider a shorter slogan. Maybe Just honey alone, suggested former prune minister John Diefenbaker. Maybe, said Mr. Cote. QUALITY DRY CLEANING BY THE LOAD 8 LB.
