Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 13, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, March 13, 1971 - THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD _ 23 Senator claims industrial group fooled governments on tax deals OTTAWA (CP) - Senator Charles McEhnan (L-New Brunswick) says the K. C. Irving interests have been amonf; Nfew Brunswick industries which "played the municipal govenunents off against one another in a ruthless fashion for special tax deals." He says tbe deals have consisted of long-term agreements for a special tax rate which was "a mfaute fraction of what they (the Irving interests) should pay." He made tbe comments during Senate debate of tbe report by tbe special Senate committee on the mass media. He said that to fais knowledge the Saint John, N.B., TelA-grapbnjoumal, a daily newspaper owned by the Irving group, "never editorialized against the inequitable and iniquitous tax deals." "But when the government brought in uniform assessment and tax rates throughout New Brunswick, stopped all such future deals and appeared to be heading for ciancellation of existing ones, Mr. Irving went before the legislature itself . . . and threatened aU m&nner of dire consequences. "His papers came through in full voice. The Telegrapb-Joiff. nal ran a story with Mr. Living's picture at the top. T^ie cut-line warned the govemmient to listen to 'the voice of New Brunswick.'" Senator McElman said that as a result the "old deals" were not strapped but some companies have since voluntarily rescinded their agreements and pay fidl taxes. 'Land of Rape, Honey* slogan ruled out (yHTA'WX (CP)- 'Hsdale, Sask., can't use the stamp cancellation "Land of Rape and Hooey" because other countries might not know the meaning of rape. Furthermore, stamp cancellation marks have to be bilingual and both in English and m French the words "land of rape and honey" would be too long. Thait was the official ruling in the CJonunons Friday from Jean-Pierre Cote, minister responsible for the post office. The Tisdale area produces rapeseed, source of an edible oil, and honey. Tisdale wanted to use the slogan "Land of Rape and Honey" to help promote a 1971 homecoming. Mr. Cote said the post office would be willing to consider a shorter slogan. Maybe just honey alone, suggested former prime minr ister John Diefenbaker. Maybe, said Mr. Cote. QUAUTY DRY CLEANING BY THE LOAD 8 LB.
