Laws are not being repealed Alimony payments troublesome OTTAWA (CP) A government fund for distribution of alimony payments would eliminate "one of the real tragedies" of Canadian society, says Ontario Liberal MP Barney Danson. Mr. Danson, who represents York North in the Commons, has launched a personal campaign for government involvement to end "the soul destroying and costly procedure" facing individuals trying to collect defaulted alimony from a. divorced spouse. "One of the real tragedies of alimony is that the husband frequently doesn't pay what the court he said in an interview A fund to provide a guaranteed payment "could save a lot of trauma for a mother and her kids." "Often the husband ordered to pay alimony skips the province, or even the country, and that makes it really difficult to collect. The mother may have to neglect her kids or give up her job to pursue her legal case." He proposes that payments be made into a government fund, with alimony distributed from the fund even in cases of default. This would avoid many cases of women ending up on welfare because of the process required to pursue defaulted payments, Mr. Danson said. The law reform commission had estimated welfare costs for such families at million a day "Under the procedure I propose, the wife and mother is assured of the payments awarded. It is then up to the Crown agency to keep track of the delinquent husband in co- operation with other jurisdic- tions. "This is something that can be done better by an arm of government than by an inexperienced and distraught mother." Mr. Danson said he has discussed this with his colleagues "and they received it extremely well." He intends to talk with Jus- tice Minister Otto Lang about the idea.
