By JERRY BUCK HOLLYWOOD (AP) - In the days when Batman was riding high on the tube, the producer wanted to cast Lily Tomlin in a series based on the Wonder Woman comic book. That series never came to be, but the producer displayed a degree of prescience: Lily Tomlin is well on her way to establishing herself as the new wonder woman of comedy. CBS is seriously considering her for its resident company as such funny ladies as Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore. The Lily Tomlin Show will be aired Friday, March 16, as a pilot for a comedy-variety series next season. Miss Tomlin gained prominence on Laugh-Li, and George Schlatter, who signed her for that show, said be believes she will become a major star in television, in films and on the stage. She is probably best known for such characters as Ernestine, the telephone- operator; Edith Am, the little girl; the tasteful -lady, and the supermarket checker. LEARNED AS CHILD Lily's "characters began as vignettes at Wayne State University and in the coffee houses of Detroit and New York. Even before that, as a child of poor Southern parents in Detroit, she was absorbing impressions. "The apartment house I grew up in was full of colorful, abra- sive people who said what they picking these things up." thought," she said. She added: "The characters "I loved them. Lily professes no burning ambition to have her own television show. "I have a certain ambivalence about it. It's not something I've aspired to. I don't think in those terms, or I hope I don't. But in terms of your profession you eventually evolve to that point "It's so hard to turn out anything of quality every week. Look at someone who has a weekly show and if they have half a dozen high moments) that's good. It's really hard." Lily said she also is disturbed by the attitude of many guest stars, which she sees symbolized by the use of cue cards. "Some performers don't even bother to learn their lines," she said. "It's a feeling that television is taken too casually. ~ Rather than work on their part and. develop it, people come in and want to horse around. That's all right. I like to horse around and be silly, too. But only after you've done your work. "AD I'm saying is that television is really valuable. It's not just a way to make money. It should be gratifying."
