Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 9, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta PAGE 3 Elwood Glover has gone a long way Hick kid from Saskatchewan thinks about his villa in Spain ELWOOD .GLOVER HALIFAX (CP) - The hick kid from Saskatchewan whose father thought the radio was frivolous is thinking ahead to the day when he is able to retire to his villa in Spain-made possible, of course, by Canada's electronic media. Elwood Glover, at 57, and host of the CBC's popular noontime show Luncheon Date, said: "I think I am one of the luckiest people alive because I truly enjoy my work." He was interviewed here while attending a Heart Fund charity ball. Mr. Glover said of his more than 38 years in radio and television: "I have a pet theory: Be on time, ne-*ar ask for a raise and take snort- vacations." He has gone a long way since his earlier days out west. It wasn't until he was 13 years old that his family owned a radio. He spent his early childhood as an only child of a western farmer and his wife living in a community devoid of any of the glamor connected with show business. The family moved to a city when Elwood was five, a traumatic move, since he hadn't been used to other children. An admitted introvert, be found it hard to relate to other kids. IMPRESSED TOP BRASS "I think I made up for a lot of my early lack of directness with people," Mr. Glover said. Following high school and two years in university, he got a break when chosen to emcee Sunday/ March 11 6:30 Q| Farm News 7:00 0 Archie's Fun House fjl) Christopher Closeup 7:30 0 Harlem Globetrotters c Pinocchio fQ This is the Life 7:40 (g) Thought for the Day 7:45 c 4-H Clubtime 8:00 Q Rex Humnard 8Gospel Hour Revival Fires fQ University of the Air 8:30 fB People's Church fQ Gospel Hour 9:00 Q Kathryn KuhJman 0 Niven Miller 9:?9 0 Sunday Hour Face the Nation Rev. He was working at the local radio station in Moose Jaw, Sask., at tbe time and was just 21 years old. His program "staggered the town" and be even got a telegram from the general manager of the national network. A year later be was with the CBC in Toronto. Part of the pleasure Mr. Glover bad derived from interviewing everyone from millionaires to movie stars is the learning experience. "I love to bring people out of themselves and I find that most bate to be interviewed. 'You have to "win their confidence which isn't always He has never considered his job work and would shudder at tbe thought of a job in the hard business world. His earlier days in tbe media were somewhat frustrating. "I didn't like tbe fuss and bother and it was nerve-racking. People fussed over my appearance and I had to shave my moustache." Luncheon "Date began on radio in 1956 and in 1963 it became an hour-long feature of the CBC television network. Part of tbe drama for Mr. Glover was the fact that shows and commercials were done live. It was shot outdoors and since tbe ice cream used on one occasion attracted many fBes thecontainer s were - sprayed with a repellent-all but the one he was to taste. A nervous technical assistant ; mistakenly sprayed all the containers. "Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until I had a large spoonful in my mouth. I was thunderstruck, not knowing whether to gag, swallow or spit it out" He did swallow it and was ill that night, but that was tbe only effect. Since Luncheon Date pre* miered the staff has grows from three to about 14 including full-time guest researchers and the Sotmy Caulfield Trio/. Although he bias had many prominent people on his program, Mr. Glover's dream guests would be Sir Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles- "because they have reached the pinnacle of their craft." Away from his hectic- career Mr. Glover seeks solitude within bis family, two daughters, 22 and 32, and two grandchildren. 'He and Ins wife were high'school sweethearts.
