Cocq) Light opera in the Gilbert and Sul- livan vein is for the present at least a lost art, and in pre- sented at the Majestic theatre, oil Tuesday night, the-veil was lifted and a glimpse afforded of that rare com- bination of talent which has given a classic touch to light opera of the Gilbert and Sullivan brand. It was the ghost of the past brought out at the local theatre, galvanized into life by the highly artistic manner in which it was presented by tn excep- tionally talented company, with a re- markable balance in the cast. The bubbling melody, the consum- mate orchestration, the lively and the concerted pieces which, in their inimitable profusion, are ack- nowledged features of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, and which are pres- ent in lost nothing in the capable and entertaining manner In which the play was handled. The voices all through were tuneful, and particularly conspicuous were the con- tralto of Hiss May Cavley, as Mac! Margaret, and the bass of Mr. Wheeler as Sir Rupert Murgatroyd. It is quite a question as to whether voices of this calibre were ever heard in Lethbrldge before. The opera, as is usual with the Gil- bert ami Sullivan light operas, had nothing of plot, and was merely fan- tasy of nonsense. Those who search- ed for plot would have been disappoint- ed, and so would be inclined to dis- count the merit of the opera. In the way of wit the. opera can hardly be said to produce' anything of the tick- ling and appealing Itind. But any consideration of this wali all lost in the appeal of the music, radiating with life, 'and which catches the popular fancy. There was nothing of what might be called "intellectual gran- deur" In the play, but that was never the. intention of its joint authors, "Ruddigore" was the real thing, and WILSONS SPECIALS for THURSDAY Crisco, 3-lb. tins; each No. 1 Navy Beans; 3 Ibs. for Prunes, fresh stock; 2 Ibs. for Cooking White Figs; per Ib. .......95c ,......2Se D.
