Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 8, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Thunday, Morel, I, 1973 THZ UTNMIDGI KRAID Arctic expedition attacked by bear WILLOW RIVER, Min. (AP) The leader of an arctic snow- mobile expedition from Min- nesota has reported that a po- lar bear tore away the wind- shields and seat padding on the machines. The six men must travel at least two weeks before repairs can be made in Greenland. Bill Cooper, head of the trans- world snowmobile expedition, told of the bear's assault in a short wave radio message to his wife in Willow River. He said the team resumed the journey, halted during the spring thaw last year, when they left Devon Island in the Northwest Terri- tories Tuesday en route to Thule, Greenland. The six arc halfway on a 000-mile trip which began in Minnesota more than a year ago, with Moscow as the desti- nation. However, the group has not yet received permission to travel across Russia and may have to halt in Scandanavia. The snowmobiles were left at Devon Island for 10 months fore the six flew back to the island earlier this week. Cooper said the polar bear also ripped some of their heavy winter clothing. It was not clear whether the bear's raid oc- curred before or after the ex- pedition members returned to where their equipment was stored, but no injuries were re- ported. Dr. William R. Ghent said ac- cidents are the leading cause oE death up to age 36, and rank third as the cause of all deaths. Yet, he said, only a year is spent on research into all categories of accidents in- cluding traffic while million is spent on heart-disease re- search and million on can- cer research. Dr. Ghent, who has been in- volved in traffic-accident re- search and has served as a con- sultant to a number of govern- ment bodies, told the Hamilton Academy of Msdicine Oat im- proved driver training is needed. 'In research conducted at Queen's in Kingston, Ont., the driver was at fault in 70 per cent of accidents studied. "Ho was ill prepared for the] complex act of driving through drink, fatigue or drugs, but by and large, he was inadequately trained." Ho said driver training hadn't changed since the days when 40 nif-es an hour was the speed limit. Dr. Ghent criticized air bags as a safety device for cars In crashes, saying tests show they do not work as well as the lap- diagonal scat belt. He said air bags are ex- pensive, require regular checks to ensure they work, sometimes inflate when there is no crash' and have broken necks of dum- mies in tests in Germany.
