Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 8, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Alberta priest marries nun to test church laws EDMONTON (CP) - A 61-year-old Edmonton area priest and a 51-year-old nun revealed 'here they were married in a civil ceremony Dec. 16. Rev. Joseph Foumier of suburban St. Albert and Anne La-force said they love each other and one reason for getting married was an attempt to change the Roman Catholic law of celibacy for priests. The wife, who entered the order of the Grey Nuns in 1940, has been released from her vows. Father Fournier, who entered the Oblate Order when 19 years old, said he could have asked for a dispensation, returned to the state of layman and then married. "But I don't want that," he added. "I want to be a priest. But I want to work and operate as a priest." TEMPORARY SITUATION Father Fournier, who has been a retreat master at the Star of the North retreat house in St. Albert, said he under- stands' his action has. incurred excommunication but does not seem too concerned about that prospect. "I miss preaching in the New program for keeping parks clean MONTREAL (CP) -Claire Kirkland-Casgrain, Quebec tourism minister, today announced a new program to keep Quebec's provincial parks clean. All people entering provincial parks will be given an empty garbage bag and a number. When they leave the parks, they will present the full garbage bag to a park official. Once a week, a bag number will be drawn and the winner will be given a free weekend for two at a provincial park. Catholic Church," he said. "But it'll come." His wife added: "This is a temporary situation. Fe will be accepted eventually." They are living now in a two-room basement suite in Edmonton. Father Fournier said he told the Provincial, his religious superior, of the marriage in January. He said he says mass every day "here in the house." Sometimes friends attended the mass, "other times it's just the two of us." Father Foumier said the difference between his situation and that of most other priests who have married is that "they walk out to solve their own problem. "We didn't get married to solve our own problems. "At my age I was settled. I had security, I had comfort and at 61 I could coast down. "I could have continued as a celibate. "But we want to break the structure. "The structure of the church is not that important to me. We need organization, yes. We need structure, yes. "But not to make an absolute of it." In a letter to Archbishop An- thony Jourdan, dated Feb. 11, Father Fournier said a married priest would bring "the priest closer to his people." He said he met Anna Laforce 15 years ago. Father Fournier said that, for the time being, he is receiving some financial support from the Oblate Order but how he and his wife will live when that support ceases doesn't worry either of them. ' "Some people had "dropped me like a hot potato (but) . . . the real friends haven't left." Monday.
