Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 7, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 28 LETHBRIDGE HERALD Thursday, March 7, 1974 Students, dogs appeal to keep postie WINNIPEG (CP) The kids and dogs of Birchwood Heights don't want letter carrier John Williams transferred to another route, but the forces of automation say he's got to go. Mr. Williams, a 29 year old bachelor who has made friends with the youngsters and peace with the dogs in the southwest Winnipeg suburb, is scheduled to start a new route March 14. The change follows a realignment of delivery patterns in keeping with postal coding and the new route will cover an area that takes in only 10 per cent of his present customers. The other 90 per cent is new. The impending change prompted students of Birchwood Elementary School to write a letter of protest to the post office, bearing the names of 41 boys abd girls along with the names of 13 dogs. letter, addressed simply to the post office and forwarded to the Winnipeg post office's public relations department, said: "The kids of the area where Johnny delivers mail all love Johnny. Please don't transfer him, we like him. Even the adults like him. He's always kind to us kids and never yells at us." Mr. Williams, who has been a postman for 8Vz years, said he found the youngsters' gesture "really heart warming.
