Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 6, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, March 6, 1971 - THE LETHBRIDOI HERALD - 23 Officials getting pre\ for anti-seal hunt protests By STEPHEN SCOTT NEW YORK (CP) - Canadian government offices in the United States are preparing themselves for the annual on-' slaught of anti-seal hunt protests. Indications are that the protests, involving Air Canada as well as the Canadian embassy In Washington and the consulate here, will not be as bad as in the past. Pickets from the friends of animals inc., the conservation organization that has caused the greatest outcry against the St. Lawrence Gulf seal hunt during the last several years, patrolled outside Air Canada and consulate offices here during the weekend. But Alice Herrington, president of friends (it uses no capitals in its name) said the protest was small compared with those of tiie past. "All your government does is send mimeographed lies in response to' protest," she said Tuesday. STARTS PHONE DRIVE Friends, which is taking four or five children out on the gulf ice March 7 to provide news media with a stark contrast to the killing of the seal pups later, has started its annual Telephone Against Cruelty campaign against Air Canada and Scandinavian Airlines. "Our members and the public are urged to call the two air-linies to express concern over the coming massacre," a friends statement says, "and to indicate a desire to fly to the Gulf of St. Lawrence to see the seals-if only they weren't going to be killed." She said the airlines were selected because they are major American dollar earners for Canada and Norway-both of which participate in the annual seal hunt off Labrador. An Air Canada spokesman said the company offices here have received about 150 protest calls since Feb. 2. There were only two on Tuesday. "Our people listen for a while and then refer the callers to the Canadian consulate," he said. EXPECT INCREASE He and a consulate spokes- Airport Him star brands it 'juntf TORONTO (CP) - Burt Lancaster says Airport, a movie he played a lead role in and which has been nominated as the best movie of 1070, is a "piece of junk." The United States movie star said in an interview: "I don't know why it's nominated. It's the biggest piece of junk ever made." The movie has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Mr. Lancaster was here to publicize his latest movie, Valdez is Coming. Rose trial rescheduled for Monday MONTREAL (CP) - Court proceedings were proposed again Friday in the trial of Paul Rose, charged with the non-capital murder of Pierre Laporte, because of a blizzard Thursday which has made roads in the city almost impassable. The trial is scheduled to resume Monday. Rose, 27, his brother Jacques, 23, Francis Simard, 23, and Bernard Lottie, 19, are all charged with abduction Oct. 10 and the strangling Oct. 17 of the Quebec labor minister. The other three suspects are to stand trial April 13. man said it is reasonable to expect an increase in protests as the March 12 date for the start of the seal hunt starts. Housing agency reduces rates OTTAWA (CP) - Central Mortgage and Housing Corp., the federal financing agency, announced Friday a reduct ion in its lending rates to 8% per cent from 9% on loans for new and existing housing. Effective Monday, the lower rates for the agency's direct loans follow the pattern set this week by the. Royal Bank of Canada on mortgage loans. The effective rate for government-insured mortgages' under the National Housing Act thus is down from a peak of more than lOVi per cent last spring to a range that applied in late 1968. The friends said last that about a half-dozen youngsters would be taken on the ice. But Miss Herrington, admitting that "parents are troubled" said Tuesday she is only certain of four youngsters making the trip. The group's statement eaid the four will be offered a "farewell" took at the natural beauty and life on the Gulf. "The presence of the teen-age students who will inherit this world of ours will dramatize that before and after of a shocking crime against nature-the murder of hundreds of thousands of harp seals." It said that harp seals are in danger of extinction but adds that the point at issue is the "brutality of the slaughter and the uselessness of it." "There is not a single product obtained from the oceans' mammals which does not have a satisfactory substitute." Canadian films win LONDON (CP) - Two Canadian films have won awards from Britain's Society of Film and Television Arts. No. 005615 Lie. No. 010121 Sea fishing areas to he sealed off OTTAWA (CP) - Beginning next Wednesday, no nation can establish a new. fishery inside Canada's 12-mile fishing zone, Fisheries Minister Jack Davis announced Friday. He also told the Commons that nations with traditional fishing rights in Canada will not be allowed to step up their activities. Mr. Davis also announced a phasing-out of traditional foreign fishing operations beginning Wednesday. The phasing-out operations would affect France, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Norway. The program would be complete by the mid-1970s. It would take several years to complete the termination of the traditional rights. But this was the "best, most orderly way" of proceeding. FEAR 'GEAR CONFLICT' Mr. Davis also said he has asked Spain, Norway, Portugal, France, Denmark and the U.K. to stay 12 miles from Canadian shores along certain sections of Canadian coast whenever' there is likely to be a "gear conflict." Such a conflict would occur when larger foreign fishing vessels interfered seriously with smaller Canadian inshore fleets. John Lundrigan (PC-Gan-der-Twililingate) warned that there will be a "flare-up" if Ottawa doesn't take effective action. He said the external affairs department has been reticent about the proposed limits and "lax" in advising other countries of them. Tom Barnett (NDP-Comox- START NEW SHIP , COLUNGWOOD, Ont.
