Sullivan is going to have lots' of company among the TV unemployed. Officers of ttw three American networks, CBS, NBC and ABC, are currently sorting out the prospects for 1971-72 and soon, the expiration notices will be going out. Many favorites carried by either of Canada's two networks, will be casualties. CBS has committed itself to buy a raft of new 3()-minute situational, must accommodate stars like Dick Van Dyke and Glenn Ford, vnU likely string along with Mary Tyler Moore, Family Affair and Hawaii Five-0, but will carefully weigh the merits of Sullivan, Beverly Hillbillies, Hee Haw, Green Acres, Glen Campbell, To Rome With Love, Men At Law and Doris Day. NBC has already decided to drop Red Skelton and Julia and has Bill Cosby, Andy Williams and The High Chaparral in a doubtful category. Safest bets are Flip Wilson, Ironside and Dean Martin. ABC is thanking its lucky stars that Marcus Welby, MD, is riding so high because their other products aren't. Even Lawrence Welk, a great American tradition, is threatened with cancellation. SEE CANADA FIRST ON TAKE 30 - V/ho said gorillas didn't like snow? Well, maybe they don't, but theyre not saying. The gorillas (above) will be seen on Take 30's,.See Canada First series on CBC television which began March 1, each week for five weeks. During the series. The Wired World color documentary Golden age of electronics The farsighted men who built the Empire State Building in Manhattan in 1931 had good intentions, but they were wrong. They doubly reinforced the "spike" at the top of the towering edifice so that dirigibles could manoeuver in and tie up to it. Little did they know that the giant floating aircraft, thought to be man's answer to swift, mass transport, would fall by the wayside like the horse and buggy. But man's ingenuity knows no bounds and the "^ike" has proved practical after all. What was once a costly mistake has turned into a blessing, because the spike has become a stxu-dy mount for an unbelievable clutter of telecommunications gear - 10 TV station transmitters, 13 radio station transmitters, microwave reflectors capable of carrying hundreds of thousands of telephone and date messages, plus assorted other commimi-cations hardware. How are Canadians doing in the race? On Tuesday, March 9, at 10:00 p.m., on Channel 7 CBC television will present a one-hour color documentary called The Wired World, which e.xplores the whole electronic communications problem. Host of the program is Clive Baxter of the Financial Post. The Wired World was co-produced by the CBC and the Financial Post. The Early Bird Gets the Worm and Savings, Too, During Hoyf s Gi.
