Six members of native caravan still in building says paper OTTAWA (CP) The Citizen says that not all of the members of the Native People's Caravan have left a federal building on Victoria Island on the Ottawa River, occupied by the group Sept. to the surprise of the National Capital Commis- sion The Indians, who came in a caravan that left Vancouver in early September and made its way to the opening of Parliament amid a violent demonstration on Parliament Hill Sept. 30, occupied the building just prior to the Hill demonstration. The group announced it was leaving about two weeks, ago after the NCC, which owns and maintains the building, cut the utilities saying that broken and damaged pipes and fixtures constituted a hazard to the occupants. However, The Citizen says six members of the group say they will continue to live there because they do not accept the decision of the other caravan members. NCC spokesman Dave Mclntosh said he was un- aware of the remaining oc- cupants. "I guess we're back to square he said. "But we're not going to boot them out or anything." He said the NCC, assuming that all the Indians had left, hired a contractor to clean up the building. He said the com- mission hopes to turn the island into a cultural centre. A spokesman for the Indians said they want to turn the old mill into "an integrative com- munications and friendship centre." They have been helping the NCC contractor clean up the building, he said. In a telephone interview from Kenora, Ont., with The Citizen, Louis Cameron, leader of the Ojibway Warriors Society, said the em- bassy would be one of a network of similar centres across Canada. He added, however, that a schism had developed between factions of the Caravan and that the dispute over whether to remain in the mill or leave had been going on for some time. The spokesman for the re- maining Indians said "outside groups seem to have manipu- lated our into announcing their departure two weeks ago. However, he added: "The occupation continues. A number of us remain, We know that many more are with us in "spirit, will work with us and return when they can." Arab conference warns Volkswagen Israel.
