FLASHBACK: February 21 and Home, described by a lo- cal TV manager as a real "switcher-offer." For those who stayed "switched-on" it was a stunning treat with John Giel- gnd, Ralph Richardson, Mona W a s h b o u r n e and Dandy Nichols repeating their original stage roles in the David Storey play. Cut to fit a standard televi- sion 9fl-minutes, this was, apart from an occasional close-up and medium shot, the only compromise. H was out- rageously funny and un- bearably poignant. The lag in a movement, the sporadic con- versations led into (he realiza- tion that the characters are in a home for the mentally ill. The vituperative Kenneth Tynan has accused John G'.el- in a play of isolation and des- pair, and in this racy company the young actor Warren Clarke as liic retarded Alfred gave z shattering performance. I The provincial onc-acl festi- val will be held in Banff to- night and Saturday. Tliis evening Edmonton and Calgary will participate; Sat- urday afternoon, Red Deer and Medicine Hat; and Saturday night, Peace River and Ed- monton. Adjudicator will be Tom Kcrr who worked with the late Tyrone Guthrie, and following the adjudications there will be open discussion involving both participants and n o n-partici- pants. It is pointed out that this offers the only opportunity in the whole year at whicli com- 1 munity theatre people can get together to air their views and problems. No entries from Lcfhbridgc, alas! It is to be hoped that some local representatives will be in Banff this weekend to talk theatre with their part- ners in the field. Checked around and found several groups interested in p r o v i d ing drama programs. Where these overlap there's bound to be some project re- jection and resulting disap- pointment. Perhaps a genera] meeting in January or even earlier of project applicants would iron out some of the prob- lems of duplication. The whole p r o g r a m, however, seems off to a better start thi.s year the birth pangs last year were painful to both youth and taxpayer. SOUTHERN ALBERTA RICHMOND. Va Hirt.
