Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 2, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 14 - THE I.ETHBRIDGE HERALD - Fridciy, March 2, 1973 Women s curling title up for grabs Pezer forced Ingram into a showdown CHARLOTTETOWN (CP1 -Saskatchewan took 11 ends to dispose of Manitoba 7-5 in their final game of the Canadian women's curling championships Thursday night and send the title game into a playoff for the fourth time since 1968. The previously unbeaten Manitoba rink and the Saskatchewan foursome wound up with 8-1 won-lost records and were to tangle again in today's playoff scheduled for 6 p.m. MST. But Saskatchewan skip, Vera Pezer of Saskatoon, said that had she been able to draw a narrow port with her second shot in the 10th end "it might have been over." Manitoba's Joan Ingram had taken a 54 lead in the ninth and the Saskatchewan rink had last rock coming home. Miss Pezer succeeded in drawing the port with her first shot. Miss Ingram's attempt, with her final rock, at a similar draw to close the port, wrecked on the front stones and left Miss Pezer repeals CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) -Saskatchewan won its third straight Canadian women's curling championship today, beating Manitoba 6-4 in a playoff that went to the last rock in the 10th end. The two rinks had finished in a deadlock for first place after the end of nine rounds Thursday night with 8-1 records. Pezer with a draw around shot to count two and a win. But the Saskatchewan skip was unable to navigate the wider draw and had to settle for a one and go to the extra end. "I was just a tense heavier on my second shot or I think I might have come through that port and ... it might have been over in the 10th," said Miss Pezer. She said the Saskatchewan girls, bidding for their third straight national crown and the province's fifth in a row, have "gotten to know the ice . . ." "Fortunately we came out all right." Miss Ingram, who had drawn to the button with her first shot to displace the Saskatchewan stone as shot rock, came up short in front of the house and allowed the Saskatoon foursome to count two. Manitoba last won the title in 1967 when Miss Ingram and two other members of her 1973 rink-third Laurie Bradawaski and second Dot Rose-curled with skip Betty Duguid. The results left B.C., Ontario and Alberta chasing the leaders with 6-3 won-loss records, followed by P.E.I, at 5-4. Quebec was 3-6, Newfoundland 2-7, New Brunswick 1-8 and Nova Scotia 0-9.
