Althoujih adapted and directed by the same man - Herb Roland - The Bells !s entirely different, and a far more serious play. One of the most famous - and enduring - of 19th century dramas, it has been played by nearly all the great actor-managers in the English theatre and was still N.S. tomboy catapulted to fame after "Snowbird" HOLLYWOOD (NBC) -Anne Murray has gone from tiny engagements to national TV in this country and Canada, to become the newest Canadian singing "superstar." The ex - schoolteacher who reached national prominence with her goM record rendition of "Snowbird," is a performing host on NBC Television Network's "The Midnight Special," on Saturday, March 3. It didn't take Anne long to arrive. Born in the mining town of SpringhiD, Nova Scotia, Anre grew up a tomboy, more at home in jeans, and eventually graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a degree in physical education She taught for one year on Prince Edward Is?and before pursuing a show business career. Anne began with backwc -is concerts, graduated- to small clubs and local TV shows and then recorded two albuns for Capitol Records of Canada. Her "Snowbird" single and her fol-lcw-up album of the same title, supplemented by TV appearances on CBC, and Anne was on her way to becoming one of the outstanding songstresses ever produced in Canada. Anne has starred in Las Vegas and at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Cashbox, Record World magazines and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and Academy of Country and Western Music all have recognized her talents with award nominations. Big incrase in color TV owners As of January 1, 1973, the total number of color-equipped TV households in the United States increased to 39,400,000 - 60.1 percent of total TV households, according to the National Broadcasting Company's latest quarterly estimate. This total represents an increase of 5.9 million color TV households since January, 1972. being staged wefl into the 20th-century. Set in Alsace, it tells the tale of a man driven mad by his conscience w'\n greed overcomes him and he commits a desperate act. Tony Van Bridge plays the central character, Mathias, the inn-keeper and burgomaster of Alsace who prospers through villainy and then pays for his crime. Appearing with Tony Van Bridge are: Kate Hawtrey as Mathias's wife Catherine; Mary Long as their daughter Annette: acd Gordon Thomson as Annette's bethrothed, the young Quartermaster, Christian, who begins to unravel the mystery of the crime. Others in the cast include: Alan Bteviss, Paul Craig, Al Bernardo, Ken Pogue, Joy Fielding, Jack Mather, and George Sperdakos. The introduction is made by Robertson Da vies. Besides Sweeney Todd and The Bells, Herb Roland has directed Mavor Moore's adaptation of The Lyons Mail, starring Leslie Nielsen (March 18); produced Rod Coneybeare's adaptation of Dracula, starring Norman Welsh and directed by Jack Nixon-Browne (March 25) and will produce the final play in the series Mrs. Dane's Defence, (telecast date April 29), directed by Francis Chapman.
