Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 1, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 12 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Sllurd.y, 1, Pheasant hatchery usefulness limited By LOUISE McARTHUR Alberta Fish and Wildlife Rearing and stocking of pheasants as part of a wildlife management program came to North America from England where the birds were raised to provide shooting on large estates. It was only natural to import this method along with the birds when they were first introduced into America in the late 1800's. Initially hatcheries were ex- tremely effective in promoting the rapid distribu- tion and build-up of pheasant populations in all suitable habitats- The astonishing results of early plantings led many to believe that building more and bigger pheasant hatcheries would make the bird populations that much better. Forty years ago, hatcheries were about the only type of pheasant manage- ment accepted and supported by sportsmen. The building of new hatcheries provided visi- ble evidence to the sportsman of where his money was going. Meanwhile, pheasant numbers levelled off as pop- ulations reached the carrying capacity of the available habitat. Despite continuing output of hundreds of thousands of pheasants by dozens of hatcheries, bird numbers remained fairly stable. In fact in many areas, they began to decline! What was happening? We now know, as a result of 30 years of research, exactly what was happening! Planting pheasants into new habitat is like pouring water into a bucket. Initially, the .bucket is empty and it can hold all water you pour into it. Eventually, however, it fills up it reaches its carrying capacity. Any additional attempt to add more water is futile unless you get a larger bucket or spill some water out to make more room. Trying to plant more pheasants into habitat which is -fully occupied simply means the birds are .wasted. Unless more habitat is made available or some of the birds are destroyed, the habitat simply cannot support more birds. Ordinarily, pheasant losses due to weather, predators, ac- cidents, disease and other fac- tors seldom lower bird numbers below the carrying capacity of their overwinter- ing habitat. Under these cir- cumstances, natural pheasant reproduction in the spring is enough to ensure a plentiful supply of birds in the fall. In recent years, however, phea- sant numbers in Alberta have plummeted below the carry- ing capacity of their winter habitat due to a successive series of poor nesting seasons. Unoccupied habitat is available for hatchery reared birds in many areas. Recognizing this fact, the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division is re-activating its pheasant hatchery, at Brooks to increase bird production on a temporary basis. At the same time, efforts are being made to stop the decline of prime pheasant habitat and create new habitat to provide more living space for the birds. Pheasant hatcheries are also useful for supplying birds for research and display purposes as well as to provide "put and take" hunting oppor- tunities. These uses will be reviewed in relation to future plans for pheasant hatchery production in Alberta. Next week: Fntnre pltni for pheasant hatcbery develop- ment and utilliallon In Alber- ta.
