Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 28, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 1age 26 Appreciating nature means Don't be a litter bug People who blithely walk away from scattered gar- bage, paper, bottles and tin cans surely have no knowledge or love of nature. They're not camping or picnicking because they're inspired by the sights, sounds and smells of things living and growing in the world. They neither appreciate nor respect the privilege of being in God's great cathedral. They're out there on a holiday, on a Sunday or a weekend for purely selfish reasons. It's too hot in the city and any place is better than staying home and sweltering, even in the woods. Another may be tired of fighting the children at home and lets them run "wild" in some sylvan set- tings While there, they pick all the wild flowers in sight, carve their initials on trees and roll in the poison ivy- Most of these people wouldn't know a trillium from a tree frog and couldn't care less. Most never notice that birds are singing their enthralling songs on all sides. They bring their own music in the form of a transistor radio. Not one in 50 would know the meaning of the word sthetic" and Jew have ever thought that etiquette could extend to the out of doors. It's hard to know what to do about Jitterbugs. Teach them to burn their paper and they'll start a forest fire. Tell them to bury their garbage, bottles and cans and they'll dig holes right where they shouldn't and then only half deep enough People can carry all kinds of stuff to the woods and stream sides but they can't carry any of it back home A box, a heavy bag of the type used in garbage cans, or even the picnic cooler can be used to bring everything back where it can be disposed of properly The sad part about this carelessness and thoughtlessness is that in parks and other public camping and picnicking spots, thousands of dollars are spent gathering up the junk and garbage. Who pays for this work? You and I and the people who throw it there. The salaries of the men who clean up comes from tax money and don't think it doesn't add up. If everyone cleaned up his own little corner of the outdoors and took care of the facilities provided, the money saved would go a long way toward building a new school, a new library or even a new hospital every year. It's difficult to catch litterbugs in the act or prove they are responsible. Many arrests are made and more will be made as times goes on, but it's a shame that such laws are needed. People should have enough pride in their heritage, in their province and their country to want to keep it clean. They should have enough respon- sibility to want to leave the area which gave them pleasure in an attractive, inviting condition. Those who leave their mess in the woods should have it gathered up, taken to their home and scattered on their lawn. Imagine the reaction of these litterbugs.
