Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 28, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Page 14 South has abundance of provincial parks Nine of Alberta's 51 provincial parks are located in the Southern Alberta region where they provide tourists and residents alike with a variety of places to get away from it all and relax. Each park provides ample facilities for picnicking, tent and trailer camping, as well as playgrounds for the kids. At parks designed for camping, a charge of per night is levied, plus an additional charge for facilities and hook ups used. Park gates are closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and there is no charge for enjoying the area during the day. In the northern area of the region, 641 acres have been set aside by the provincial government as the Chain Lakes Provincial Park. Located 25 miles west of Nanton, the seven mile long lake winds itself along the bottom of the Happy Valley. The kids can swim, and there are 143 camping sites interspersed with over 200 picnic tables. Visitors can swim and fish in the Willow Creek when they travel to the Willow Creek Provincial Park, 10 miles southwest of Stavely. The park lies in a valley surrounded by the greenery of the Alberta foothills. Little Bow Provincial Park, 13 miles east of Champion, takes advantage of the Travers Irrigation Dam to provide a beautiful boating area. Over 200 camping sites and 250 tables are available at the park site, which is beside the lake. Boats can be rented to cruise on the lake, which winds through the coulee landscape and valley, and the kids can swim. The park is presently under renovation, handling only 10 per cent of its normal capacity, but it should reopen fully in the near future. Twelve miles northwest of the City of Lethbridge on Highway 25 is the Park Lake Provincial Park. Nestled in a grove of trees, the park site is part of 188 acres of recreational space which features swimming, boating and fishing for visitors Camping facilities are plentiful and there are over 250 tables for picnickers. East of Lethbridge and two miles north of Taber is the Taber Provincial Park. It has 90 camping spots on its 127 acre site, with exactly 200 picnic tables provided. The fascinating Writing on Stone Provincial Park is just 26 miles east of the Southern Alberta town of Milk River. Although only 50 camping sites are available., the park is a major attraction primarily because of the ancient Indian pictographs and stories which are carved into the stony cliffs. Woolford Provincial Park, with 90 picnic tables and facilities for swimming and fishing is located just 10 miles east of the town of Cardston. Twenty miles south of the Mormon community are 362 acres which have been designated as Police Outpost Pack. Visitors can swim or boat, or simply enjoy the privacy of the 29 spot campground. Possibly the prettiest of all nine provincial parks is Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, Nestled in the foothills 14 miles southwest of Pincher Creek, and very close to the Waterton Rockies.
