Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 28, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Children raise their hands in vote for freedom Beaten slave children freed BANGKOK (AP) Fifty-four barefoot and ragged children have been freed from a walled blouse factory where Thai police said they had been forced to work as slave labor. The youngsters said they were beaten, fed only nee and had to sleep on the floor. "I cried every day at the factory; I missed my parents very said 14-year-old Laone Pluenchai, tears running down her hollow cheeks as she told of seven months of 15-hour work days, meagre food and beatings before police raided the factory Wednesday. The owner, Charoen Supatadarat, was arrested along with two woman relatives and held without bail despite attempts by- three persons to bail him out, police said. Authorities charged Charoen with illegal detention of the children and violation of the labor laws. They also began a search for his wife, accused by the children of beating them whenever they asked to be paid for their 6 a.m.-to-9 p.m. workdays, or tried to climb the factory's 10-foot wall. The wife disappeared at the time of the raid. "Each of us got only one small plate of rice a said Laone, who is two years older than the 12- year-old average of her fellow workers. The youngest is nine. "If any girl didn't eat properly the owner would give bar salted rice that she couldn't eat at Laone added. "They gave us two pieces of bread ev- ery 10 days. The Thai public welfare department said it will care for the of whom are suffering from malnutrition and skin try to send them home. But for the time being they are living at the police station and being fed by the police. CAREERS Person required for WAREHOUSE DUTIES and TRUCK DRIVING Excellent benefits, good starting wage.
