"a glorious television and more." "a brilliant achievement by one of tele- vision's finest producers." The quotes are from three press reviews of "The Forbid- den the highly acclaim- ed one-hour "NBC Reports" color special made by NBC News producer Lucy Jarvis which will be repeated Tues- day, July 17, on the NBC Tele- vision Network. The program was first presented last Jan. 16. Mrs. Jarvis was the first American to receive an invita- tion from the People's Repub- lic of China to film a news do- cumentary. She went to Peking last August to begin produc- tion. For 10 years Mrs. Jarvis sought permission to go to the People's Republic of China, and for five years she applied for permission specifically to film the Forbidden City. She want- ed "The Forbidden City" to be the third part of a trilogy which inc'.jdes "The Kremlin" and "The Louvre." (In a spectacu- !ar coup, she won Soviet per- mission to film the Kremlin in 1963 and, 1964, she was able io open the Louvre to millions of TV viewers for the first time.) One TV writer called "The Forbidden City" a superb companion piece to her earlier 'Kremlin' and "The Louvre.' The Forbidden City was the gigantic fortress city within- a city that housed the emper- ors of China from 1421 to 1911, when the last Manchu ruler was driven from his palace. It stands in the middle of Pek- ing surrounded by walls ex- tending 2Vz miles and contain- ing hundreds of buildings. It has been called one of the su- preme architectural accom- plishments of the world and the greatest museum Orien- tal art. The program offers, in Mrs. Jarvis's words, "A look inside the Forbidden City that nobody has ever had before a total visit" to palaces, throne rooms, temples, gardens, art galleries, porcelain collections, and ur-c'arthed relics of the past.
