By PAT SULLIVAN Herald Sports Editor It was simply a case of putting it all together for the Lethbridge Lakers Tuesday evening. Nine games on the road in the Alberta Major Baseball League left the locals, pennant winners in the league last year, with a 2-7 record. "We're better than said -playing coach Paul Sullivan Monday and the Lakers proved it. Al Ferchuk, who toiled with the club last year, was in control all the way as the Lakers belted Calgary Giants 9- 0 before better than 650 fans. Lakers will be at home to Calgary Jimmies, weather permitting, this evening at eight o'clock. Ferchuk limited the Giants to just six hits, one a double by John Edwards, while his teammates battered Al Arthur for 17 hits. Arthur has started two. games for the Giants and his mates have yet to score him a run. However, one or two runs wouldn't have helped the Calgary righthander Tuesday as the Lakers performed for the fine opening night gathering. Rob Roy, who along with Bob Brown and Tim Negrello had two singles, drove in Brown with the only run the Lakers needed as they took a 1-0 first inning lead. Brown's first single of the game came in the second inning as he knocked in Neil Bozak for the game's second run. Bozak led the Lakers at the plate with two doubles and a single while Jim Dompier, Paul Sullivan and Gary Picone chipped in with a double and single each. Only Bob Papworth got to Ferchuk for more than one hit for the Giants as he stroked two singles. The game was.a close one until the sixth inning when the locals came up with two runs. They added two more in the seventh and three in the eighth. While Ferchuk was mastering the Giants from the mound shortstop Kent Petersen, who like the rest of the club had at least one hit off of Arthur, was anchoring a solid Laker defence. Errors had proven costly to the locals in earlier games but with Petersen leading the way with four putouts and eight assists, the Lakers were flawless. Ferchuk enjoyed the backing he got Tuesday. "It makes my job that much he said. He made it look easy most of the time. With the help of two double plays Ferchuk had faced only 15 batters in the first five innings. He set the Giants down in order in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings and just missed again in the eighth when he issued his only walk of the game. Ferchuk was only in trouble on two occassipns. He gave up two singles, with one away, and a wild pitch in the Central Air Conditioning INSTALLED Here is what you get: Outdoor Condensing Unit Matching Evaporator "A" Coif 15 feet of Pre-charged Refrigerant Tubing Deluxe Room Thermostat Model CFCO30D3B BTU Central System Ideal for 3 or 4 bedroom home. flcclticsl .intern, duck, T and Inmate blower arc adequate. However, he got Papworth on a popup and Paul Gallivan on a hit back to the box. In the ninth inning Papworth and Gallivan both singled but their efforts were nullified by a double play. A fly ball to right fielder Picone ended the game. Dick Hazell threw a four-hitter and struck out nine batters to give Edmonton Tigers a 4-2 victory over Red Deer Generals Tuesday. Hazell pitched no-hit baseball for the first 5 (2-3) innings before his streak was snapped by Red Deer's Phil Urabe with a single in the sixth. Edmonton Blockers scored eight runs in the first four innings and went on to a 13-4 victory over Barrhead Cardinals Tuesday. Mike Tehen had a perfect night at the plate, going 5 for 5, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a double in the second. Tehen drove in five runs for the Blockers, who had 17 hits off three Barrhead pitchers. FLY BALLS A lot of people, 650 to be almost exact, remembered the entertainment the Lakers provided last year as they showed up Tuesday Ken Petersen, an Idaho product, caught the fancy of the Laker fans Tuesday causing teammate Bob Brown to jokingly say "you really turned those fans on out there tonight Kent" Randy Maxwell will toe the rubber tonight against the Jimmies, if the field is dry enough to play on It must mean something to play in front of home crowds...
