It was the first homecoming at Sedgevdck's Central high school and one seems to call him Mr. Spar- the central figure for the event. More than 500 people came to renew ac- quaintances and to honor him for his long involvement with the school. But the 86-year-old retired janitor at the school was run- ning a table tennis tourna- ment during the homecoming and was reluctant to take lime out for interviews or honors. When it was time to go to the new gymnasium for pre- sentations, students had to be sent to usher Fred away from the tables. Born in Essex, England, in 1886, Fred came to Sedge- wick, about 90 miles south- east of Edmonton, in 1909. For' a while he worked for an Ed- monton dairy, picking up cream from farmers and shipping it to the dairy. Continued on Page 5 Ping pong is his life They honored Fred Sparrow at Sedgewick Centre High School recently for being a friend, janitor and ping pong coach. Fred, 86, worked for 27 years os a janitor and has continued lo serve the school as a ping pong coach since he retired in 1955.
