Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 25, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Tuesday, June 25, 1974 LETHBRIDGE HERALD Early shipyard restored PORT HILL, P.E.I. (CP) Green Park, located at a point where Lady Slipper Drive passes through this community on the western shore of Malpeque Bay, recalls this island province's, involvement in the era of wooden ships In 1865, James Yeo, Jr., used a fortune built on ships to build Green Park, the name he gave to the Victorian residence which is one of the major attrac- tions for visitors here each year. The surrounding 200 acres of forest and field are owned by the province. Surrounded on three sides by water, the site includes a campground, picnic area, interpretive centre and a reconstructed shipyard. A visit to the area might begin with a tour of the historic Yeo house follow- ed by a stroll through the interpretive centre, a new building which contains displays and artifacts related to the island's early shipbuilding. This year, for the first time, the provincial tourism department is arranging a program of guided walks for visitors. They will be conducted by a naturalist and are design- ed to make full use of the park's 200 acres of forest and field Green Park became an important shipbuilding centre in the early 1800s after Napoleon began a blockade against the British, preventing the island nation from obtain- ing shipbuilding timber from traditional European sources. Entrepreneurs in the British Isles turned their attention westward to the North American colonies and scoured the colonial forests for wood. They built ships in the New World and sailed them, loaded down with timber, to England. Often, both ship and cargo were sold, creating a demand for new ships. The booming industry Preserving heritage Green Park on Malpeque Bay is dedicated to preserving the shipbuilding heritage of Prince Edward Island.
