Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 25, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta ------------PAGE PRAIRES AND FOOTHILLS BLEND IN VAST SCENIC LANDSCAPE Gait Museum Records History Most museums in larger urban areas are inclined to challenge the visitor with a ple- thora of displays which boggle the mind and destroy shoe leather. One can spend days viewing artifacts reflecting on the life of pre-historic man, the Medes and Persians and the Holy Roman Empire and still have only seen part of what these exhibits have to offer. The Sir Alexander Gait Mu- seum in Lethbridge, quite sensi- bly has confined itself to exhi- biting articles which will give an indication of life in Alberta from the earliest days to the present, a time covering rough- ly 100 years. The museum is housed in what was once Gait Hospital, and has a picturesque setting overlooking the coulees. Memorabilia on (he family of William Stafford, first superin- tendent of the coal mines, con- stitutes one room. Another room is given over to display guns while another is the Indian Room. Household furniture, of early Canadian vintage; period cos- tumes, prints and paintings by local artists, photographs do- nated by descendants of early settlers, have all been careful- ly displayed to give an authen- tic picture of the beginning, growth and development of southern Alberta.
