The garden, honoring ties be- tween .Japan and Canada, open- Mi its cypress-wood gates offi- trijilly in 1967 when Prince and Princess Takamatsu of Japan vi.siled the city. Since its unofficial public opening in isfifi, about have toured the four-acre, 000 site. About one-half the visitors have been from Canada, and the rest, from almost every other country in the world. The garden, reputedly the largest, inland Japanese garden outside Japan, is expected to ret] uire 10 yea rs before it tomes to iis full beauty. Featuring a bell tower, idcal- mountain and waterfall, stone lanterns and trees, the garden is centred on ils two- si orcy pavilion. I''or the gently rolling hills, 300 tons of rock, chosen for appropriate size, shape and col- oring, were Imuled from the O'owsnest, Pass. The Nikka Yuko garden has both t he stream and simulated water in the fot-F- of chipped white stones which have gone into the mak- ing of the dry garden. Currently on iis summer visit- ing hours, 8 a.m. to p.m., the garden is managed by Vic Meech, assisted by Mrs. A. G. MacDonald, supervisor', and nine young Japanese-Canadians as hostesses.
