Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 22, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta THf IfTHMtDSI HERALD Friday, Junt 12. If79 HOME OF THE WEEK Handle mower safely Cut that green jungle in your backyard down to size safely. With the lawn mowing season upon us, here are some handy Lips for the mower operator. Fuel the machine out of doors where gas vapors can escape. Never fuel a running or over- iieated engine. And beware of the rocks, sticks, boms, toys and tools that can be lurking in the long growth of your lawn. Avoid serious injury by wear- ing sturdy shoes. Bare feet, ;ennis shoes and sandals are out. And keep your feet clear of the blades. If you have a riding mower, be extra cautious on inclines and steep banks. Above all, insist that children stay clear of mowers at all times. Follow these hints and ihen enjoy that thick carpet of A ell-cut grass. FIRST This typical Cape Cod home is a "balanced design'' with garage on one side and living- dining areas in a matching op- posite wing. The Jajout is ideal for a suburban or country lot. The front entrance is protect- ed by a porch with colonial pil- lars. To the left of the entry is the living room spanning the full depth of the wing with win- dows at front, and side, and a door to the back garden. The kitchen has a bay window- overlooking the garden and the range is surrounded by counters on three sides. The fireplace is located in the 18' x 13' family room. There is an excellent traffic pattern throughout the ground floor. The master suite faces the front and has its own bathroom 'with shower and a large walk- in cupboard. Upstairs are three bedrooms and a full bathroom. There is FLOOR DESIGN H4-1679' Lower Floor-1430 Sq.Ff. Toronto Star Syndicate) Eating outdoors can be fun It's easy, it's fun, and some- hew, food always tastes better when prepared and eaten out- doors. Whatever the occasion a family dinner, a gathering of friends and relatives, a roman- tic date, a special event, or a party for no reason at all have it outdoors. There is something about the freedom and informality of the great outdoors (even if it is only as far away as your backyard or patio) that makes everybody have a great time. Don't be a party pooper and limit your outdoor fun to only the summer months. Late fall and early spring cook-outs can be the most fun of all. The smell of delicious bar- becued meats filling the zingy, crisp air makes even a frank- ly overdone frank taste won- derful. All you need is the slightest excuse, a little imagination, some recipes, and your out- door gas grill. Go ahead; have an outdoor barbecue Gold hoards The amount of gold hoarded by ancient civilizations probab- ly totalled not much more than the output of the Witwaters- rand district of South Africa in a single year. mXKM YOUR GARDEN By Isabelle R. I think that two pests iihat cause much concern and dam- age are Leaf Miners and Leaf Rollers, which attack Lilacs and Birch Trees. Years ago it was hard to control these as it wa? only possible to do some- thing while they were out on the leaves, when the adult in- sect was laying eggs, and again when the larvae left th-2 leaves to pupate. A multi purpose j spray had to be used just as the leaves were opening up and again when fully opened. Later en, these insects are protected in between layers of t'.v leaves or are rolled up in the leaf, which gives the leaf a blister- ed appearance. If you unroll the leaf, you will find a small white grub. Now, with the de- velopment of the new systa- mics, the Leaf Miners are more easily controlled. Dimethoate is a chemical which enters th; sap system of the temic insecticide and will be killed off. Isotox is another systemic that may be used. These may be sprayed on plants, or the Cygon is also quite effective when paint'J on tree trunks. Using a paint brush, apply a band about 6 inches deep, or for large trees, 5 times the diameter of the trunk that is, for a 4 inch diameter trunk, paint 5 x 4 or a 20-inch band around the trae. This rate of application has proven to be very successful Some Elms, especially the American specimens do not tol- erate Cygon too well, and some lose their leaves. If used, try a small area first. Aphids are a very trouble- some insect and multiply at such a tremendous rate. While we seemed to be bothered with the green variety mostly, tSere are red, black, yellow and brown ones. They do a great deal of damage by sucking the sap from flowers and orna- mentals, etc. If you notice the eaves becoming distroted and curled and turning red or yel- ow, check the underside of the eaves and you will discover innumerable aphids. You can control them by spring malathion, Nicotine Black Leaf Isotox, or Dia- piant so that any insect chew- zincn. Use any of these according to the direction, spraying particularly on the underside of the leaves. Spider Mites also do consid- erable damage to plants, and although not a true insect, are related to spiders. They attack Spruce, Pine, Birch and other trees, as well as Phlox, Mari- golds, Hollyhocks, etc. These little 'pests' are very hard to see and are worse during hot, dry conditions. Their presence is indicated by a greyish de- posit on the leaves. Later, a fine webbing appears. At the first sign of trouble spray with .Kelthane, Diazinon Insect Spray or Isotox. There are oth- ers, including dusts, which are also effective. Another ocntrol on tress is to use the very strongest stream of cold water from the garden hose, washing all branches thoroughly. Doing this several times a week will help, as well as get rid of any dust. Dew Worms >are present in lawns around many homes, and they seem to be getting worse. Thsy are different from the typical earthworm, being much larger (up to 10 inches Chemical controls such as Chlordane will help but this material is highly poisonous, so would caution when using where there are children or pets. You can soak the lawn with a solution of I'-i or. of Po- tassium Permanganate t pur- chased at a drug counter) to 2 gallons of water, applying this amount to each square yard. Use only enough of the crystals to color the water a purplish color. Slugs seem to be with us year after year, and are found under the leaves of plants or any rub- bish left lying around. They cannot stand exposure to the sun and so seek shelter where t is cool and shady.
