Doc Severinson's mod clothes Wild tie started it all LOS ANGELES It all began when Doc Severinsen wore a wildly decorated tie on the NBC Television Network's "The Tonight Show .Starring Johnny Carson." Later, the cameras caught him wearing a mod shirt. Car- son's comments about the at- tire made the audienco laugh. In short time, Doc wore mod pants and soon wild outfits be- came the norm. Today, Doc (music director of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny is one of TV's fashion plates as well AS a na- tionally acclaimed musician. His wardrobe is a definite part of his personality. One of the kudos for Doc's fashions came from the Fashion Foundation of America which, last Feb- ruary, named him best-dressed entertainer. Much of Doc's (or television appearances and for concert tours is design- ed by Bill Whitten, 29 He has a clothing salon in West Holly- wood, Calif, called Yforkroom 27 and has been workirfg with Doe for nearly a year. TO CHANGE IMAGE Whitten has some definite ideas about the clothes pre- pares for Doc. "I am hoping to change the image Doc projects. I would like to go beyond the unusual clothes to the out of sight things top quality, choice articles. Not that the clothes I make are not unusual. But I want Doc's garments to be bold, dynamic and solid." Whitten, a native of Ala- bama, got his first important job in California, witft a lead- ing Hollywood stow. He was a 'designer there for two and a half years. Afterwards, he into business for himself, then on to another store, where ie started a dress line called the Chicago music group. Le- Roy Kelly, Billy Dee Williams nd Lola Falana. Says Severinsen: "I suppose here are some who would 'lassify my clothes as a gim- mick of some kind since they iclp call attention to my band. Vhen I'm on the road, for ex- ample, people are interested fa he music I play, sure, but they also take a gander at the out- its I wear. "Anyway, when you play con- emporary music for today's audiences there is no reason not to appear on stage in the dress of the day. Wearing a conservative suit designed for he 1940s today is comparable o having somebody wearing today's styles 30 years ago. Be- sides, I find mod clothes com- fortable. Most musicians would rather work wearing the casual elegance of today than the old- ?asbioned 'band outfits' that once were the order of the day." Generation. Two years ater, he added, a line of cloth- ng for men which became lighly successful. While fashion director for another organization, one of his designs was chosen by Playboy magazine to be presented at :he International Design Collec- ion. Whitten was the only com- mercial designer to represent the United States at the event. Whitten's clients include in addition to Seversen, former football-star-turned movie actor Jim Brown, Mrs. Henry Fonda, Neil Diamond, Cicely Tyson, Disney Him is big hit The Disney Studio is ecstat- ic over the film, "The way their latest World's Greatest has gone.
