Over 100 of the 122 local clubs were rep- resented, and over 200 persons, including delegates and obser- vers, participated in the meet- ings. The meetings were chair- ed by the national president, Mrs. Gwendolyn Black of Sack- ville, New Brunswick. The Lethbridge club was represent- ed by the president, Mrs. Bea- trice Meinlzer. Resolutions were approved regarding: government study of a jreater use of part-lime work n the Canadian economy; government financial in- volvement in child care centres; drafting of national child- care legislation; government Involvement at all levels and In all phases of pollution control; urging the early establish- ment of a National Status of Women Commission to begin implementing the recommen- GIGANTIC CARPET CLEARANCE! Other than that, they might take to tearing out their hair, standing on the corner and crying, or simply ignoring the local motoring public. The traffic thorn is back, after a valiant attempt by all concerned to speed up nomebound cars. Originally, a beautiful sign adorned the 6th avenue con- glomeration, but was scorned by passing automobiles. A crusade of "we'll get you to notice somehow" was staged by the gendarmes, and all luckless persons who turned the wrong way were quickly favored with a white slip, often called a ticket. It used to be a favorite pastime, to sit alongside the street, and anticipate the next transgressor of, the law, and bet on the number that would be nabbed by the man in blue. As it was, the painting crews decided to usurp power and took things into their own hands, and painted the streets in the dead of the night. They too might be better satisfied il they took up another profession, as the motorists displayed amazing control, and ignored the paint as well. Three foot long white arrows, indicating exactly and pre- cisely which lane is for what and flaming yellow stripes and squiggles are all of no avail. Whereas the above-ground level signs were unseen be- cause the drivers looked at the ground; the reverse Is now in effect, and all eyes are cast heavcuwards to Ignore tho in-front-of-the-car-on-the-road new signs. Other Interesting developments in the same area include two used-to-be-parking spots, which were recently filled in with asphalt. Naturally, those who drive refuse to recognise the differ- ence in appearance. It must be assumed that the angle parkers, whose space has been cut by a few feet, think it is all In the name of progress, and makes sideswiping their cars that much easier lor oncoming traffic. The overall solution might be to set up a cattls gate type of thing, complete with electric prodder. A car in the wrong lane attempting a wrong turn, would activate gates which spring up in front and behind the devi- ant, cutting him off from other traffic. A mechanical device would open the drivers' door, a clamp would be attached to his arm to keep him still, and an electric shock would be administered. The offense would be recorded by a computer, and each time it was re-committed, the shock would become stronger. Another possibility would be to seal cff the entire inter- section, and re-route cars for blocks around. Then the memory of the "old days" and how the driven brought it all upon themselves might serve to teach future generations a lesson sorrowfully learned. On second thought, perhaps herding sheep Isn't such bad idea. They are oltin less stupid than the average human animal. THE BETTER HALF By Barnes MRS. BEATRICE MEINTZER President datlons cf the Royal Commis- sion on the Status of. Women and urging local clubs to press for a status of women council in each province and to work with these councils to speed the implementation ol status of wo- men recommendations on a local level. Besides social action, con- cerns of education and fine arts were also considered. FIGURE BACKFIRED NIAGARA FALLS, Ont.
