Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 21, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Page 7 Poet-author Helwig named drama manager Announced recently by John Hirsch, head of CBC- TV drama, the appointment of David Helwig to the new post of literary manager within the drama department, will be effective July 1. "It will be Mr, Helwig's function to search out writers, new and old, people who have had'little or no contact with CBC television drama says Mr. Hirsch. "He will go to university creative writing classes, to foster and stimulate interest in writing drama for TV. Also, he will set up workshops for writers interested in learning film and television techniques. Mr. Helwig is a respected member of the literary and educational communities, with wide contacts. He will help to make the CBC television drama scene accessible to writers in a way that perhaps we have not been, up to now." Best known as one of Canada's leading poets, Mr. Helwig is also a short story writer and novelist, and several of his stories have been telecast in dramatic adaptations on CBC television. His original film script, a half-hour drama titled A Day That Didn't Happen, was seen in the Program X series. A full-time teacher in the English department at Queen's University since 1962, Mr. Helwig is author of several books of poetry, including Figures In 'a Landscape, The Sign of The Gunman, and the Best Name of Silence; the title poem from the latter, written for voices, was produced on the Anthology series on CBC Radio recently, and radio rights have also been purchased by the BBC in England. In addition to The Streets of Summer, a collection of short stories, he has published a novel, The Day Before Tomorrow, and A Book About Billy, the story of a real-life drug addict and criminal, His Latest book-length poem, Atlantic Crossings, will be published this fall, and he is currently completing a new novel. Toronto-born, 36-year-old David Helwig grew up in Toronto and Niagara-on- the-Lake, received a degree from the University of Toronto, and achieved his M.A, in English at the University of Liverpool, He returned to England (London) in 1969 on a year's sabbatical (o work on his first novel, He and his wife, Nancy, have both been involved i prison work, leaching and organizing drama workshops. In (he early '60s, they worked in summer theatre with the Straw Hat Players at Peterborough, and in 1967 David Helwig's stage play, A Time of Wjnier, produced by the Domino Theatre of 'Kingston, was "best new play" in the Eastern Ontario Drama Festival. Mr. Helwig is a member -if the LtMgue of Canadian Poets and the Writers Union oj Canada. For the past four years, he has been eo-editar of an annual anthology of new Canadian short stories.
