Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 21, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta He needs t to be paid on time Thursday, Jun. 21, 1973 THI LITHMIDGff HIRA1D 39 Heritage Totem in place July 1 PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. (CP) On July l the people of Port Edward, on the northern British Columbia coast near here, will raise Heritage Totem, a 36-foot pole with a fitting name. The pole was carved by Nor- man Tait, 30, and his father Jo- siah, 62, The elder Tait is chief of the wolf clan of the Nishga n a t i o or "ravens all around the basket." Norman Tait follows his fa- thers profession as a carver, but his permanent job is with Vancouver's Centenial Mu- seum and he carves masks, bowls, totems and rattles as well as whatever else he wants to. "I suppose Initially I began carving because I saw it as a means to making some he uaid. "It is no longer that because I do it with a sense of pride and I really don't know what I would do If 1 one day I could no longer carve. 1 "I wanted to do this pole be-. cause I come from this area and my people live in this he added. The elder Tait looks at the pole with a more reflective thought. "This is the most im- portant thing my son can do. to carve a he said. "For In- dians this is very important." The pole is 36 inches In diameter at the base and tapers to 18 inches at the top where an eagle sits on the head of a raven. The halibut fisherman follows and after that are a killer whale and a grizzly bear. Then comes the salmon fish- erman and at the base is a bea- ver. "I could have done a story but instead, so as not to upset the people whom the story be- longs to, decided to do a pola that represents all the Norman Tait said. The pole represents the Nishga, Tsimshian, Haida and Gitshan tribes, all of which have been increasingly affected by the changing times. The animals have likewise been affected. The eagle, killer whale, beaver and grizzly are all threatened species. Your newspaper carrier is in business for himself. He buys his newspapers at wholesale and sells them at retail.
