Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 21, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta The turmoil of a turncoat Thurtday, June 11, THI LlTHIRtOOI HIRALB By BERNARD EDINGER PARIS (Rcuter) France's war in Indochina, the savage campaign from 1946 to 1954 which preceded American in- volvement, ended more than a decade after for some of the men who waged it. For Jean Chabert, a teen- age hero of the Second World War French resistance, the last act took place after France's final defeat at pien Biea Phu when he stood disho- nored against the wall of a bleak military prison, beaten, kicked and insulted by his for- mer comrades-in-arms. For Chabert was one of the 900 Frenchmen who went over to the Communists in Indo- ohina for ideological reasons or simple thirst for adventure. He fought against his own countrymen and ended damned by all. The extraordinary story of these men, long kept silent the French Army which pre- ferred to honor its 90.000 Indo- china dead ha? only now be- come known through a new book. The book, Ho Chi Minn's White Soldiers by author-jour- nalist Jacques Doyon, is an exhaustive 320-page study of the subject, full of tales of courage, treason and sudden death among the hills of the Vietnam highlands and the mosquito-infested river deltas. Sought donations TTie story also tells of Foreign Legion deserters of the Re- publicans, inspired by Com- munist solidarity, and Ger- man SS veterans of Stalingrad for once to savor the elusive taste of victory. The adventure of Jean Cha- bert who now lives in a dreary town in eastern France, where his name means nothing to his neigh- bors, is one of the most typi- cal and the most tragic. Chabert only told his story guardedly to Jacques Doyon for he knows that there are still bitter men in France with whom he sailed to Indochina, in theory to fight the Japa- nese, and who have scores to settle. Born to a family of laborers and factory hands strongly at- tached to pre-war ideals of working class solidarity, Cha- bert joined the resistance when hardly 17, fighting the Germans as a member of a Communist-led band of parti- sans. When France was liberated, he signed up like many others to fight on with the regular army until the final defeat of Germany and Japan. But when the young para- trooper was sent to the Far East, it was not the freshly defeated Japanese whom he faced but the newly created Viet Minn, Ho Chi Minh's Communist national liberation movement of Vietnam. Treachery There were no helicopters to ferry the French troops to and from battle, and a search and destroy operation then %vas a 30-day forced march into the hostile jungle where the weak were left along the way and wounded died of gan- grene before they were taken to hospital. It was a vicious war where both sides used surprise and treachery as decisive weap- ons. There were rarely any sur- vivors when a unit of either camp fell into an ambush such as the one in which Jean Chabert was captured. His captors had no trouble per- suading Chabert that he "was fighting for the wrong cause." Along with several other Frenchmen and a band of des- perate deserters from the French Foreign Legion, Cha- bert served in a special unit which roamed the Red River delta entering French posts in regular uniform only to turn their guns on the unsuspecting defenders from within. Chabert was reiurned to France in 1964, practically thrown out of Hanoi as a relic of the past. But before he was released, he was subjected in the court- yard of a Marseille military prison to a session of brutality and humiliation by Indochina veteran? still in service. SPECIAL OFFER!
