Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 21, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta ____ Thursday, Junt 21, 1973 THE LITHBRIDGE HERALD It Export permits receive approval OTTAWA (CP) The Na- tional Energy Board has ap- proved a majority of the export applications reaching it since export controls on gasoline and heating oils went into effect, a board spokesman said Tuesday. Many approvals dealt with existing contract obligations by refiners and should not be inter- preted as weak enforcement of the controls, he said. The board, responsibel for ad- ministering the controls and en- s u r i n g adequate domestic stocks, reported 12 applications by noon Tuesday for gasoline exports totalling barrels. The controls went into effect last Friday midnight. _ The spokesman said seven permits totalling bar- rels, were issued while two oth- ers, involving barrels, were refussd. The remaining three, totalling barrels, were still pending. _______' Mounlies leave their calling card OTTAWA (CP) RCMP raided Michael Kaplan's apartment May 3, seized 213 marijuana plants and left a message with two friends asking him to get in touch with them about the matter. Kaplan dropped into the local RCMP office the next day and was charged with cultivating marijuana. He pleaded guilty in court and was remanded for sentencing. An RCMP superintendent said the case isn't unusual. "We've done it before. When there's no one at home, We leave a message. There's so much .drug work going on that it's a matter of priorities." Order now, and have FURADAN on hand when you need it. Ten applications totalling 000 barrels had come in for heating oil exports, of which six, totalling were ap- proved. The others were denied. The board spobssman said ex- porters were given a 'grace pe- riod" of roughly 48 the time Energy Minister Don- ald Macdonald announced the controls in the Commons last Thursday afternoon. "In some cases, there want ships loading at dockside. We had to take this type of thing into account." DECREASE EXPECTED He said both the rate of appli- Ccitions and the number of ap- provals is expected to drop. Ex- port decisions would be mads in the light of supplies on hand and projected trends. Mr. Macdonald announced the controls after gasoline exports, spurred by heavy demand, par- ticularly in the United States, ruse to barrels Of gaso- line in the first four months of 1-373, more than 50 times the total in the same four months of 1972. Heating oil exports in the same period rose to 1.8 million barrels from just over one mil- lion. Crude oil controls ware im- posed by the government _ in February after heavy foreign demand sent exports soaring and world energy shortapss be- gan to slow the flow of foreign oil into Canada. Lawyer sued for million NEW YORK (Reuter The two sons of executed atomic spies Ethel and Julius Rosen- berg named lawyer author Louis Nizer in a ?3-million suit Tuesday, saying he pirated death-house letters from their parents to them for use in his latest book. Michael Meeropol, 30, and his brother Robert, 36. both of Springfield, Mass., also accused Nizer of painting the false pic- ture that the Rosenbergs didn't really sons and "de- liberately made themselves martyrs and wrongfully com- mitted themselves to be exe- cuted." After the Rosenbergs were executed exactly 20 years -ago Tuesday, their two sons were adopted by Anne and Abel Meeropol. In their suit, the sons also named Doubleday and Co., pub- lisher of Niger's book The Im- plosion Conspiracy, an account of the Rosenberg case. The sons allege that letters written to them by their parents had been made into a book called Death House Letters of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. Proceeds from the copyrighted volume were to be used for the benefit of the sons, the suit claimed. The sons said that Ni- zer used parts of the letters without their permission. The suit asks that further sales of the book be enjoined and that Nizer and Doubleday account for all their profits from the sale of the book which was published Feb. 9. The sons also want the profits to be added onto their million in damages. to you and nature CHEMAGRO LIMITED 77 City Centre Drive Mississaugua, Ontario Hospital evacuated OLDS (CP) The Olds Mu- nicipal Hospital was evacuated after a water main broke, in- terrupting water, gas and elec- trical service.
