Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 21, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta 44 _ THf IFIHBRIDOE HERAID WldneiJoy. "p BAKE KING T1NWEARR69. 2 fop 88c Cars being banished from major cities By AUSC 11ARGHEAVES PARIS (neuter) Traffic free zones, aside from 'orca- thing new life inlo choked city ceoirtes, arc also proving good [or business says a special report published lierc. In many parts of the world Florence and Tokyo to Vienna and story is 'jle some. The car, after gaining a near-strangle- hold on 20th-century urban life, is being gradually banned from the city centres. The result, says a report by the Organization for Eco- nomic Co-operation and De- velopment, is cleaner air and increased turnover in shops in the areas affected. OECD environment expert Kenneth Orski wrote: "T h e recently-introduced ban on cars in tlie inner city of Vienna lias been reported to have lowered pollution lev- els by 70 per cent. In Tokyo and Marseilles auto exclusion produced xjually impressive rcsulls." "With the current emphasis on a purer environment and the 'quality of urban we are likely to see growing pub- lic pressure for curbing traffic in central urban areas. Avail- able experience sttows that traffic bans are operationally feasible and commercially successful." SALES RISE In Vienna, shop owners re- ported increases between 25 and 50 per cent in turnover during the first week of the ban on traffic in the inner city. Tn Essen, West Germany, Increases between 10 and 35 per cent were reported, and in Rouen, France, the figure was between 10 and 15 per cenl. Since the idea of pedestrian precincts began gaining mo- mentum in the late 1060s, scores of cities have intro- duced permanent or experi- mental traffic-free zones. "In West Germany alone, 28 cities have introduced traffic restraints and auto-free zones since Orski said. But he added that most of the plans still are on a small scale, often limited to a single street. However enthusiastic city-dwellers may be to curb the inconveniences of the au- tomobile age, they still appear reluctant to walk after dec- ades of reliance on private cars. Larger-scale projects have been attempted in cities like tlio Hague and Duesscldorf, which have 1.5 and 2.1 miles respectively o f traffic-free streets. Vienna is considering a traf- fic-free "environmental oasis" with a diameter of about three-quarters of a mile in the historic heart of the Austrian capital. Getting rid of cars gives town centres an opportunity to become "healthier, more via- ble city Orski said. "The inner city would grad- ually resume its original role of fulfilling the needs of peo- ple in search of amusement, entertainment and relaxation, and of providing a place where visitors and residents alike can shop, visit museums or simply sit at a side-walk cafe watching the world go by." Wins trip NATAL (HNS) Miss Ann Kalrichak of the Sparwood Sec- ondary School was selected to represent the school in tha Voyageur program of the pro- vincial and federal govern- ments.
