THE BETTER HALF By Barnes Ann Landers Dear Ann Landers: My wife" and I were married five years ago. We practiced birth control tor the first three years because we weren't ready for a family. Two years ago we started to try Last week we learned the great news. Barbara is pregnant. This morning we got into a terrible hassle. It was about her smoking. I know I read somewhere that smoking is bad for pregnant women Do you have recent information on this subject? Please, Ann, give me the facts so Barbara will come to her senses. Looking Ahead Dear Looking- Actually, it's not the pregnant woman who is harmed by smoking it's the unborn child Dr. Nevil Butler. Professor of Child Health at the University of Bristol in England, did a 14- year study. It was the most massive experiment of its kind, involving births Even the women who smoked only two or three cigarettes a day gave birth to a higher percentage of defective babies The most startling figures were a 30 per cent increase in newborn deaths and the doubled risk of congenital heart disease. If those facts aren't enough to make a pregnant woman throw away those filthy weeds she's got rocks in her head. Dear Ann Landers: I agree with almost every word you write. Now, will you give me a hand, please? It's important. Every hour, cats and dogs are born in the U.S. Many humane societies kill about animals a month. There is little time or money left for improving the situation. Thousands of animals are abandoned to suffer horribly before being scooped up by the highway department The owners responsible for these atrocities give as their mam reason for producing unwanted litters, "I wanted to show my kids the facts of life." Couldn't they just buy a book9 They might also show the facts of death at any animal shelter. Why are no campaigns being waged against the ever increasing pet explosion? How about promoting the slogan, "For Pet's Sake, Don't Litter Concerned Dear Concerned: I'm for it Here's your letter and. I hope readers who love animals will take it from there. Dear Ann Landers: I resent it -when I make a phone call and am asked, "May I tell her who is calling'" I can understand such procedure in a business office, but in a home? Whose business is it except the party to whom I wish to speak9 I get the impression that the person who asks is screening the calls When I'm asked to identify myself I am forced to be rude When someone says, "Would you like to leave your name and I can either do so or say, "No, thank you But I appreciate the choice. Monterey, Cal. Dear M.: Apparently you think everyone who has a phone also has the God-given right to intrude on the privacy of others whenever he pleases Sorry, I don't agree. The polite way is to identify yourself without being asked. You then give the other party an alternative They can either accept the call, return it later, or not return it at all if they don't care to. Confidential to Where Will It Our forefathers did without sugar until the 13th century, without coal fires until the 14th century, without tea or soap until the 17th century, gas or matches or electricity until the 19th century, canned or frozen foods until the 20th century. I think we'll make it. Even if drinking is the "in" thing in your crowd, it needn't crowd you out. Learn the facts from Ann Landers' booklet, "Booze and You For Teen-Agers Only." 'I think I'm ready to face the crisis now how much is this costing West coast workers identify with Marxists By DEBRA CRAINE VANCOUVER (CP) For the Boylans, the July 8 federal election is a family affair Tom and Anne Boylan, their son Charlie and his wife Sharon Stevenson are all can- didates for the Marxist- Leninist Party of Canada. Tom Boylan, a 67-year-old electrician currently out of work because of a construc- tion strike in British Colum- bia, is running in the traditionally New Democratic Party constituency of Van- couver Kingsway. The riding has been represented for nine years by Grace Maclnnis, who is not seeking re-election. His wife Anne, a 56-year-old office worker, is contesting Vancouver South, represented in the last Parliament by Con- servative John Fraser, who is seeking re-election. Charlie Boylan, 31, a tow- boat deckhand and former college teacher, is going after the heavy working class vote in Vancouver East. Voters there.have never elected any party other than the NDP or its predecessor, Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. Sharon Stevenson, a 27-year1 old writer, is running in Toronto Scarborough East, where she formerly made her home The Marxist-Leninists have 105 candidates across the country, mostly in the heavily- populated areas in Ontario and Quebec. In B.C., they have 11 candidates, all runn- ing in the Victoria and Greater Vancouver areas. It's the first time any of the Boylans have run for political office, although the family has been active in the Communist Party since 1947, both in Can- ada and in the United States. The Boylans left the party in 1968 in opposition to its sup- port of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. They have been involved with the Marxist-Leninists since last fall. Their campaign in the Van- couver area has been under- standably subdued, financed solely by friends and party supporters. One of their biggest expenditures has been the deposit required to be a candidate The Boylans distribute pam- phlets explaining their pro- grams and campaign door-to- door, talking only to the work- ing people Charlie Boylan says they are responding "Their reaction has been amazingly he said in an interview. "The workers are absolutely convinced the election is a fraud He said most of the workers he has spoken to "express a particular cynicism" that "all politicians are the same, all governments are the same, they're always' against the working man.'"
