Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 17, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wudnt-nloy, Juno 17, 1970 THE tETHDRIDGE HERALD 21 Cerebral Palsy Not A. Handicap With Onl. I rogram BOWMANVILL15. Out. 27 years ago with cere- bral palsy. CaUierinc llliiir of 'Bowmanvillc round it impossi- ble to find employment, even with Grade 12 education. But today sbe is this southern On- tario town's newest entrepre- neur. Although her speech mid mus- cular co-ordination are affected by the crippling disease, Miss Blab4 is a fighter and deter- mined not to be beaten. Stic learned of the now Com- munity Business Services Asso- ciation tr'aining program tor handicapped individuals, look the two-Week course ai Queen's .Park, Toronto, and became the first woman to graduate. Sponsored by the vocational rehabilitation branch of the On- tario department of social and family services and the S.M Company of Canada, this train- ing program has enabled Miss Blair to set up her own busi- ness. CBSA is made up of handi- capped individuals who inde- pendently own and operate busi- ness services offices throughout North America. They are per- sons who otherwise might find it difficult to integrate into com- petitive employment. Offices such as the one Mist Blair is operating in Bowman- viile cover most areas of pei- sonai business services. This in- cludes copying, short-run dupli- cating, mailing lists and mailing services. BUSINESS THRIVING On the premises she also lias equipment such as overhead projectors which can be rented for meetings, pins other types oi services related to graphic re- production. Business is already thriving for Miss Blair. "It's a wonderful feeling being able to operate my own she says. "1 now can contribute to the commun- ity as a taxpayer and to my- self." Apart from completing Grade .12. she also has some Grade 13 subjects, has studied music and practical nursing and lias taken course in .Red Cross. Catherine's m o I. h e f. Miss Virtue (as we call her) wears colorless nail polish, sensible shoes, but no bra and no girdle. Got the picture? If anyone says "Damn1' in her presence, she lowers her eyes and acts offended. This liolier-Than-Thou dair.e reads dirty books and collects pornography. (We found a few choice items in her desk drawers.) Another gal in this department pointed out that iMiss Virtue always wears the same dress on Wednesday that she wore on Tuesday. Aixl on Wednesday her usually perfect hair-do looks like a rat's nest. This means, of course, she has a standing date every Tuesday night with some and she does not sleep at home. Somebody should tip off Miss Virtue that we are on to her, but no one wants to. Will you do The Know DEAR IN: According to your extraordinary powers of deduction, if a girl wears the same dress to work two days in a row she did not sleep at home. I'd say the evidence is fairly frail, Dearie. Who docs your work while you figure all this stuff out? Thanks for letting me know what some office workers do with their lime. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Some people have terrible tele- phone manners. Please print my letter. Maybe the guilty will see themselves and get smart. 1 have a friend whom I call occasionally. If her daugh- ter answers the phone she says, "Monr is busy. I'll have j her call you back." Sometimes Mom doesn't call back until the next day when 1 am too busy to talk. In other words, my friend will talk to me when it is convenient for HER. I deplore such rudeness. From now on if a frieno can't come to the phone when 1. want to talk, and 1 am told, "She'll call back, "I'm going to her not to bother." What do you think ol thai, Ann Spirit DEAR IN: Your complaint is a spendid example of so- cial common form of distorted vision. Simply be- cause you have a phone doesn't mean whomever you call is obliged to drop everything and speak to you. The person wljo places1 the call is the "intruder." How fascinating that you resent being inconvenienced but you fail to see that your call might inconvenience others. Now that you have the total picture, 1 hope you will reverse, your thinking. DEAB AJSTS' LANDERS: The whole town is discussing yonr wonderful meat loaf recipe, f am so pleased it won prize in New Orleans! I did not see the recipe, imfor- tunately, because my husband hides the paper whenever he gets mad at me. I'm sure this is what happened the day our local paper carried your meat retipe. Will you please do me a favor and reprint it, Ami? You are the most popular person in Hopldnsviile, Kentucky on account of that recipe. Thank a Header When I Can Get The Paper DEAR SOMETIMES: I printed that meat loaf recipe twice and several hundred readers thought it was once too many. A few food editors1 around the country threatened to start writing an advice column if 1 didn't stop printing rec- ipes. Please ask one of the ladies in Hopkinsville to give it to you.
