Store Hours Open daily 9 30 a m to 5 30 p m Thursday and Friday 930am to900pm Centra Village Mall Teleohone 328-9231 By CY FOX The Canadian Press Dismissal of publisher Jean-Jacques Servan- Schieiber from the French cabinet adds another political twist to the inevi- table controversy about the lenewal ol French nuclear tests in the Pacific President Valery Giscard d Estaing has been both criticized and cited lor shrewdness in dismissing Servan- Schreiber after the personality m the anti-Gaulhst Reform the decision to resume testing The tiring of Servan- Schreiber pleased the Gaulhsts on whom Giscard d Estaing must count for vital support in the national assembly But there are suggestions that Servan- Schreiber's inclusion in the cabinet in the first place was an alarming act of political folly since the publisher s well-known opposition to nuclear testing contradicted views expressed by Giscard during the presidential election campaign MADE DEMANDS Gaulhsts insisted that their support for Giscard, Paris nuclear tests spark controversy who is not a member of their party, depends on, amont other things, his continuation of the inde- pendent French strike force geared to nuclear weapons The "force de frappe" was inaugurated by the late president Charles de Gaulle as part of his efforts to reduce French de- pendence on Washington Giscard's first gesture as chief of state gave the impression that he was more in sympathy with the United States than were his Gaulhst predecessors There also was evidence of much grassroots distaste m France for the atmospheric nuclear tests already conducted in the Pacific and now scheduled for renewal Giscard apparently was responding to this feeling as well as to world protests in announcing cancellation of one of the tests planned for this year and promising a switch to underground experiments in the future POLICY AFFECTED But arguments for maintenance of the independent strike force have been strengthened by the discredit into which the Watergate scandals have brought the Americans and West Europeans over con- sultation in times of crisis The strike-force policy also has been bolsteied by reported technical advances made by the French in the nuclear held over recent years The addition ol submarine launched nuclear missiles to the force de frappe increases its power, though this is only a fraction ot that deployed by the U S or the Soviet Union The French argue that the independent nuclear status has carried their rocket technology to a point where their ability in this field outweighs that ot Britain, which relies heavily on American development programs The French also consider themselves fortunate in not being so vulnerable to switches in American nuclear pohcv But French nuclear testing seems likely to remain under least from the vocal Servan-Schreiber who charges that the military establishment and the Gaulhsts combined to pressure Giscard into ordering resumption ot atmospheric tests your attention!
