Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 12, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Jwio 12, 1971 THE LETHMIDGE HI.1AID IT Sample results in 24 hours Concluded from Page 16 the equipment was functioning properly. When ready, a measured amount of extracting solution was added to the test tube, de- pending on which element in the soil was being tested. The racks, including the soil and extracting solution, then put into a special shaking machine to thoroughly draw the element in question from the sample. Following shaking, the ex- tracting solution with tthe ex- tracted element is poured from the test tubes Into small cups through filter paper. This helps to clean the sample further. A measured amount of this solution is then put into heat resistent cups, heated to evap- orate the liquid portion of the sample and form a powder. A prescribed chemical is then added to the powder to get a color scale, which when tested on a light reading machine, tells the technician how much of the element is hi the sample. Mr. Sandbcrg said every ele- ment has a different extraction process and in many cases, a different testing process. When the feed samples are ground, accurate amounts are taken on analytical balances so delicate toe amount of pencil lead used to cross a T on a sheet of paper can be measur- ed. The sample is then put into beakers and heated on a special machine which simulat- ed the action of an animal's stomach. The "digested feed" is then distilled in order for the techni- cian to determine the amount of protein in the sample. Careful comparison Philip Sondberg, Agri-Analysis manager, carefully atures chemicals used to test samples at the laboratory. Corner 3rd Ave. and 8th St. S.
