Government researchers tell us that modern crops produce the most nutritious foods in history. Wages attract women to B.C. sawmills VANDERHOOF, B.C (CP) Wages and working conditions are prime attractions for women employed a a sawmill near this northern British Columbia community The Engen division of the government-owned Plateau mills, 12 miles west of Vanderhoof, employs seven women on its two shifts, some operating machinery, some using muscle power Dressed wood emerges from the noisy mill in ranging from two-by-four studs to two-by-10-inch boards 16-feet long, and when the flow increases, workerc stacking the lumber by hand hustle to keep up with the pace. They dress in heavy clothing to defy the cold, work boots, coveralls, woollen shirts, topped by hard hats while carrying on hard, demanding physical work. Among the workers, in spite of the shapeless clothing, one can spot a few with more delicate features Women their faces flushed, are cheerfully hurling around heavy lengths of lumber. They have little time to talk, for the sawmill conveyor is unrelenting in its supply of lumber which must be stacked promptly. "You caught us at a busy said Joanne Thornton, 25 "We do not normally have to work as hard as this." Asked if she liked this sort of work, she said "Sure. I do it because the pay is an hour. I used to work as a teacher's aide and cook for disturbed children in Montreal That was really hard work Lee Triggs, 41, who also stacks lumber, agreed that the pay is a prime attraction. Her husband is employed as a welder at a nearby mine and they have three adopted children ranging in age from 8 to 14. Mill superintendent Ike Fehr said the mill began employing women more than a year ago and that they had worked out well although some women objected to outside work during the winter. "They don't always like the cold Mr Fehr said employing women to work side-by-side with male employees had not created a problem He said male employees ''like to work with the ladies well enough as long as they are not too ladylike COMBINE MOTORS CHRYSLER INDUSTRIAL SIXES AND V8'S AVAILABLE FROM STOCK!
