Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 10, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Monday, June 10, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 11 Six minute mile in a wheelchair Not quite fast enough Don Dietzen of the Miners just couldn't beat out this bunt. Olympia Stride showed his heels By PAT SULLIVAN Herald Sports Editor What started out as a six- horse field in Saturday's featured race at Whoop-Up Downs, boiled down to a two- horse battle. Stranger Luck was a track scratch and then Blue Deen wasn't all that happy about being involved in a race, so he left jockey Barbara Suitor at the starting gate and was a post scratch. This left just a four-horse field which quickly became a battle between favored Olympia Stride and Sir Elliott. Olympia Stride held off a brilliant late charge by Sir Elliott to win the City Packers feature. Olympia Charge covered the five furlong distance in one minute flat. Given an excellent ride by jockey Fred Tobacco, Olympia Stride took an early- lead and held it until the final turn when Howard Boggs, aboard Sir Elliott, made his move. Olympia Stride, owned and trained by Dan Keshane of Kamsack, Sask. paid and For the second time in the Spring Race Meet an inquiry was upheld Saturday. This time, it was a steward's inquiry in the sixth race. Copper Dan, ridden by Boggs. %vas third at the finish line but was placed last after stewards ruled he had interfered. The sixth race held a lot of the afternoon's attention. Herb McNally. currently enjoying an outstanding meet, won the sixth atop Triple Charm. However, the four- year-old thoroughbred, owned by Tom Bensm.iller and trained by Hally Wallgenbach, lost all of its charm as it dumped McNally in winner's circle. McNally fell heavily and for a time it appeared as though the horse stepped on him when he was on the ground. An ambulance took McNally to the hospital for observation. Ivan Clark knew exactly how McNally felt. Ivan, a newcomer to 'Whoop-Up Downs, was left biting the dust in the second race after Mr. Go Lucky bucked him off. Clark should have known something was up as his dumped ;n the paddock area just prior to the race.
