Fowler, clerk of the assembly from Port Hope. New Presbyterian moderator flays 'malaise of affluence' KITCHENER. Ont. (CP) The declining membership in the church today may be attributed to a kind of malaise that goes with affluence, the new moderator of the general assembly of the Presbysterian Church in Canada said in an interview. Rev Dr. Hugh F. Davidson, elected to the highest office in his this week, noted that better incomes mean School sale appealed KITCHENER. Ont. (CP) The principal of Knox College and the chairman of Ewart College, both affiliated with the University of Toronto, gave notice of appeal this week to the Presbyterian General Assembly at its annual meeting. The appeal, referred to a special committee to be appointed by Moderator Hugh Davidson. says the educational committee exceeded its authority by approaching the University of Toronto with an inquiry about selling either or both of the colleges without consulting the schools concerned. The appeal says serious embarrassment has been caused to the governing bodies of the two colleges and to their faculties and students. greater opportunities for recreation and travel. "Other volunteer organ- izations and service clubs are finding it difficult to hold their he said. "This problem is not Dr. Davidson said. "Back in Old Testament times the prophet Amos complained about the people who were so preoccupied with their winter houses and their summer houses that they had no time to worship God." From 1950 until 1967 the number of members has gradually decreased. LOST Last year, the Presbyterian Church in Canada lost members. However, the who remained gave seven per cent more than the church received in 1972, Dr. Davidson said, "partly because more dollars are available, but also because of the sustained stewardship program which has been carried on in North American churches." Canadian denominations have been associated with the Stewardship Commission of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States for many year% in producing stewardship materials. The new moderator has been secretary of the executive of that commission for the last five years. "It is not always wise to Numbers down assembly learns KITCHENER. Ont. ear-old daughter.
